ATHENS - Former UGA Football WR George Pickens appears headed to play for the Dallas Cowboys.
That is a result of a trade from the Steelers to the Cowboys for Pickens in exchange for at least a third-round pick and “other pick swaps” according to ESPN. The move comes as Pickens enters his fourth season in the NFL.
Pickens has become one of the steadiest receivers in the NFL over the last three years. In that time he’s played in 50 games and accounted for 2,978 yards and 13 touchdowns on 184 catches. His best season so far came in 2023 when he had 1,140 yards and five touchdowns on 63 receptions. Pickens is one of the leaders in the NFL in yards per reception.
He was drafted No. 52 overall by the Steelers in the 2022 NFL Draft. That came after Pickens’ return to Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs for the 2021 national championship season. Pickens suffered an ACL in the spring of that year - meaning he missed nearly all of UGA’s regular season.
But Pickens’ return paid off massively when he caught a 52-yard bomb from Stetson Bennett in the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship Game. The pass set up Georgia’s first score of the day against Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide. Georgia won the contest 33-18 in the first national title for the program since 1980.
Pickens was also named the MVP of the 2019 Sugar Bowl his freshman season after slashing No. 7 Baylor for 175 yards on 12 catches. He scored one of the No. 5 Bulldogs’ three touchdowns that night on a 27-yard pass from Jack Fromm. That performance tied a UGA bowl record and was the most receptions for a Dawg in 17 seasons
Pickens has his best season at Georgia in 2019, but only played 26 total games his entire time in Silver Britches. He ended his career at UGA with 90 receptions for 1,347 yards and 14 touchdowns.
The former Hoover (AL) star picked Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs over Auburn on Signing Day.
