ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are off to a near perfect start on the recruiting trail in the 2024 class, and they’re bringing in plenty of speed to get the class started.

After landing a commitment from four-star receiver Ny Carr‍, one of the fastest wideouts in the South out of Colquitt County (GA), the Bulldogs were able to land a commitment in late January from one of the fastest and most explosive running backs in the country in Pebblebrook (GA) star, Dwight Phillips, JR‍.

Dawg Post caught up with Pebblebrook offensive coordinator Maurice Allen to get an idea of what Phillips Jr will bring to Athens.

“I believe what makes Dwight special is obviously is his speed”, Allen said.

100%. It’s clear that Phillips will bring easy track speed to Athens.  The junior ran a blazing 10.43 in the 100-meter in last May’s GHSA State Championships, coming in 1st place in the state.

“His ability to set up defenders and erase angles is also impressive”, Allen continued. “He knows when to use it and his acceleration gets him through creases in a blink of an eye. He’s surprisingly strong in the lower body & has shown that he can run through contact at the LOS. He has amazing vision that is just a compliment to his speed.”

Phillips may not be the biggest back in the 2024 class, but the Bulldogs are looking for speed in the 2024 cycle. They’ve got some bruisers on the roster already, and now they’re bringing in someone with elite speed and acceleration. Not only that, but he’ll bring a competitive drive and a winning mentality to Georgia as well.

“I think Dwight is the ultimate competitor”, Allen continued. “He hates to lose and will do anything to see his team win. He’s a kid at heart, joy to coach & tries to push those around him to rise to the occasion.”

He’s an excellent weapon out of the backfield, but Phillips Jr. will also bring some versatility to the running back position. The 5-foot-11 170-pounder is lethal as a receiver who can be an easy mismatch for opposing defenders down the field.

“He’s lined up at WR in all 3 years for us”, Allen added. “He does a great job catching the football from the slot, outside and out of the backfield.”

He’s a big-time weapon and one of the biggest playmakers not only in Georgia, but across the South for the 2024 class.

Dawg Post has him ranked No. 10 prospect in Georgia right now for the 2024 class.
