ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs will be hosting one of the nation’s top prospects this weekend.

He’s also a current Ohio State commitment.

That would be elite 2025 cornerback, Jontae Gilbert.

A playmaking sophomore defensive back out of Douglass High School in Atlanta, the long, athletic 6-foot-1 175-pounder is one of the top overall defensive backs in Georgia. He committed to Ohio State early in the process, giving the Buckeyes his commitment back on July 22nd

Gilbert took a visit to Georgia in late November to watch the Bulldogs take down the in-state Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He’s familiar with Athens, the program, and will be back in town this weekend to spend more time with the staff.

Gilbert spoke with Dawg Post recently about what he likes most about the Georgia program.

“The way the guys play the way at Georgia stands out”, Gilbert said. “They work. They practice. The amount of DBs they produce in the league is impressive as well. I like that coach Fran Brown has a great relationship with his guys and he’s all about business.”

As a prospect, the Atlanta native is a natural cover corner, but he’s also an incredibly tough player who can deliver a big hit on the ball-carrier. He wasn’t tested often in coverage, but when he was, he was in lock-down mode. He’s fundamentally sound, has easy D1 size, and shows natural instincts in coverage. He reads plays wll against the run and has no problem shedding blocks to making a play in the backfield.

He may not play for a great program, but when he’s on the field, he’s easy to notice. He’s a nationally known prospect as a sophomore and could push for 5-star status in the 2025 class.

Dawg Post ranks Gilbert as the No. 4 prospect in Georgia for the 2025 class.

Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs have +250 odds to win the 2023 national championship next fall according to FanDuel.
