ATHENS - After winning back-to-back national championships with Steston Bennett leading the way, you’d think backup QB Carson Beck would have the best odds of winning the biggest individual prize in college football next season.

But according to FanDuel, it’s Brock Vandagriff, last year’s third-string quarterback, who has the best odds on the team at +3000 to win the 2023 Heisman Trophy.

Carson Beck, who played in six games last season, has only +4000 odds to win the Heisman.

Do the folks at FanDuel know something we don’t?

Let’s make something clear. Carson Beck should be Georgia’s starting quarterback heading into the spring. He’s earned it. He deserves it. He’s waited his turn, and in today’s era of college football, that’s not easy to do.

Quarterbacks don’t like to wait. They’re like 11-month old babies. They’re ready to play. They’re the star. They don ‘t care that it’s Monday and you have to write stories.

But Carson has been patient. He’s learned Todd Monken’s system and has shown in a reserve role that he has the arm talent to lead Georgia’s offense through the air in 2023.

In 2022, Beck was 26/35 for 310 yards and 4 touchdowns. He was excellent against Vanderbilt, going 8/11 for 98 yards and two touchdowns.

Of course, Kirby Smart won’t just give the job to Beck this spring. The Jacksonville native might be next in line, but he still has to hold off Vandagriff, who was a 5-star out of high school for a reason. The dual-threat gunslinger from nearby Prince Avenue Christian was one of the nations’ top high school quarterbacks in the 2021 class and came to Athens with a lot of hype. He didn’t play much at all in his first two years, so this spring will be massive for the third-year quarterback.

Right now, Dawg Post is hearing it’s Carson Beck’s job to lose. However, it looks like we’ll see a true quarterback competition this spring. It should be fun to keep an eye on, and it’s clear that whoever does win the job will have beat out two very talented quarterbacks when it’s all said and done.
