ATHENS - We’re just three days away from college football history.

One of two things are going to happen. TCU shocking the world and winning a national championship, or Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs winning their second-straight title, starting a possible dynasty in the sport.

It’s not just “business as usual” for Smart and the Bulldogs. This isn’t an average game in October.

This is a chance to go back-to-back. One of the hardest things to do in sports. It doesn’t happen often, but it could very well happen on Monday night.

Kirby Smart sat down with ESPN’s Marty Smith to talk about the significance of winning back to back national championships.

“I’m aware because I was part of one while at Alabama”, Smart said. “I know how hard it is to do. I also had the great fortune of having a really good team last year. Our staff and organization did such a good job with that team. But we lost so many of them. So, it was like starting over.”

There weren’t many who thought Georgia would be in this position.

“Alabama is the team to beat in 2022”, they said.

“Georgia lost too many players in the 2022 NFL Draft”.

But here we are. Smart told Smith that as much as he loved last year’s team, this one will always have a special place in his heart.

“I love the pride the players have in the way they play”, Smart added. “We had a really emotional moment Friday in the hotel before the Ohio State game. That was the first time in my 7-year career where I got emotional in front of the players. I had just heard them speak from the heart. MY emotion was just love. I told them I didn’t think you could love a team more than what I loved last year’s team for all they embodied and all they stood for. Then along came this team. They’ve got a mean chip on their shoulder.”

Now, it’s time to go accomplish what few others have. Kirby Smart knows what’s at stake.

One championship is great. The first one is always special. But two puts Kirby Smart on a list with the best of the best. He knows it. His team knows it. And on Monday, they’re ready to make history.
