Former Georgia Bulldog Maria Taylor Gives UGA Helmets to Former Alabama Crimson Tide Stars

ATHENS - Former UGA grad and letterwinner Maria Taylor was in a gift-giving mood Sunday night, and she had the perfect gifts for former Alabama standouts Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne.

Taylor, who played volleyball and basketball at Georgia, gave the duo mini Georgia helmets during a segment that aired on Sunday Night Football on NBC. 

“I would never come empty handed,” Taylor said. 

“That had better not be something Georgia related,” the duo said before getting the bag with the Georgia gear. 

“I would never do that to y’all,” she replied handing them the bags.

“You are such a troll,” NBC’s Chris Simms said giggling. 

“I showed up with gifts. You know, Christmas is right around the corner,” Taylor said. “I feel good about it!”

Payne finished the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship Game against the Bulldogs with six tackles during Alabama’s 26-23 win over Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs in Atlanta. This year Allen, Payne and the rest of the Tide will be watching as the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs and coach Kirby Smart take on Ohio State in the Peach Bowl. 

Alabama did not make the College Football Playoff. Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide are playing in the Sugar Bowl against Kansas State.

Taylor attended Georgia, where she played volleyball and basketball. She was named to the All-SEC volleyball team three times and was also a member of the USA A2 National Volleyball team. She graduated from Georgia in 2009 with a degree in broadcast news. She returned to UGA and earned an MBA in 2013. She is a native of Alpharetta.

Taylor was with ESPN for eight years before moving to NBC for coverage of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. She has been on NBC’s NBC's Sunday Night Football pre-game show Football Night in America since 2021.
