ATHENS - The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs and coach Kirby Smart are the “hottest” team coming into the College Football Playoff, Kirk Herbstreit said Saturday.
Herbstreit gave his take during the start of the Las Vegas Bowl with the Oregon State Beavers taking on UGA’s arch rival the Florida Gators. Georgia hammered the Gators 42-20 in Jacksonville just before Halloween this fall.
“Going in I would say that Georgia has been at a different level most of the year,” Herbstreit said when asked who the hottest team going into the College Football Playoff was. “But Michigan has been on a mission from the time they lost to Georgia last year. But I would say Georgia is probably the hottest team.”
The No. 1 Bulldogs are coming off a 50-30 win over LSU in the 2022 SEC Championship Game. Georgia will play No. 4 Ohio State in the 2022 Peach Bowl in Atlanta. The last time Ohio State played they were thumped 45-23 at home by Michigan. The No. 2 Wolverines outlasted Purdue to win the Big Ten earlier this month.

This is Georgia's third appearance in the College Football Playoff. It is the first time the Bulldogs have gone into the competition ranked as the top seed. Both times previously, in 2017 and 2021, Georgia was placed as the No. 3 overall seed.
“Georgia is the reigning national champions, and they have not lost. I guess they struggled a little bit with Kent State, and everyone washed them away,” ESPN’s Pat McAfee added. “All they have been is dominant. They have a 25-year old quarterback who has won the national championship. Georgia is going to be a problem for anyone - everyone knows that.”
