Georgia Back at No. 1 in the CFP Rankings

The ranking was not a surprise after Georgia dismissed former No. 1 Tennessee 27-13 in a one-sided affair in Sanford Stadium over the weekend. That game is the most-watched college football game of this year - beating out the World Series, which was played on the same day. In addition, Ohio State's trouble at Northwestern coupled with Michigan losing at the half to Rutgers means those two didn't look as good as the Dawgs.

The No. 1 Dawgs are set to take on Mississippi State on the road this Saturday. That game kicks off at 7:00 on ESPN. Should the Dawgs win, and they are 16.5-point favorites, they will win the SEC East for the fifth time in six years. Ohio State hosts Indiana at noon on FOX. The Wolverines host Nebraska at 3:30 on ABC. Ohio State will host Michigan in three Saturdays on the final Saturday of the season.

"I almost feel like Georiga is going to the CFP no matter what they do," ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit said Tuesday night.

The result Saturday was Georgia’s second win in a row over a team ranked No. 1 in the College Football Playoff Rankings. That committee’s rankings took a beating this weekend with No. 3 Georgia demolishing the so-called No. 1 Vols. Clemson, which was ranked at No. 4, lost by 21 on the road at unranked Notre Dame. No. 10 LSU beat No. 6 Alabama in overtime at Death Valley.

Rankings Review

*In 2022, the Bulldogs checked in at No. 3 in the CFP rankings last Tuesday. Last year, Georgia was No. 1 in all five regular season CFP rankings and were No. 3 on selection day.

*Georgia transitioned from No. 3 in the preseason poll to No. 2 after week one and then to No. 1 in the Associated Press (AP) poll prior to the South Carolina game in mid September.

*After whipping the Gamecocks 48-7, the Bulldogs assumed the top spot in the Coaches poll as well. The Bulldogs were a consensus No. 1 for the next two weeks. Then Georgia fell to No. 2 in both the AP/Coaches polls following its 26-22 road win at Missouri on Oct. 1. After a 42-10 win over Auburn in week six, the Bulldogs reclaimed the top spot in the AP poll.

*Georgia has been ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in 24 of the past 26 AP polls, with the other two weeks at No. 3.

Noteable from win over No. 1 Tennessee

*In the highest ranked matchup in Sanford Stadium history, No. 3 Georgia defeated No. 1 Tennessee 27-13 (CFP ranking). The high-flying Vols entered the contest leading the nation in scoring (49.4 ppg) and were held to the lowest tally in the Josh Heupel era.

*After registering just 10 sacks through eight games, the Bulldogs collected six against top-ranked Tennessee who had surrendered only 13 on the year. Sophomore STAR Javon Bullard led the attack with the first two of his career.

*Georgia is 4-1 as the No. 3 CFP team. On CFP Selection Sunday in 2017 and 2021, the Bulldogs made the CFP as the No. 3 seed. In the first CFP rankings this year, the Bulldogs were No. 3 behind UT and Ohio State. Georgia was No. 1 in the Associated Press and Coaches polls while UT was No. 2 (AP) and No. 3 (Coaches).
