ATHENS - The clash of No. 1s in Athens on Saturday between Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs and the Tennessee Vols produced the most-watched college football game of the season so far.

More than 13 million viewers tuned in to watch the Dawgs take out the Vols 27-13. The game was the third time in college football history that two No. 1 teams have faced one another. It is also the second game in a row that Georgia has defeated a No. 1-ranked foe (2021 CFPNCG - 33-18 over Alabama).

The amount of viewers is not surprising (13,059,000). Georgia is one of the biggest brands in college football. The Vols’ run to the No. 1 spot featured wins over traditional powers LSU and Alabama. UT’s win over the Tide was watched by 11.56 million in October.

Before this week, the most-watched game in college football was the Bama-UT game followed by Bama’s narrow win over Texas in week two. For the Bulldogs it is the 11th time since the 2017 season that the Bulldogs have played in front of at least 10 million viewers.

Since 2012, the Bulldogs are the No. 3 most-watched team in college football. Tennessee-Georgia is the 17th most-watched game in college football in that time - narrowly in front of Alabama-Tennessee; and narrowly behind Norte Dame-USC.

Alabama-Georgia, which is unlikely to be played in 2022, is still the most-watched game since 2012 with 116,637,000 total viewers.

Georgia’s win over the Vols is the Dawgs’ most-watched game since the Bulldogs played Alabama in Atlanta (15.3M), Georgia-Michigan (17.2 M) and the CFPNCG vs. Bama (22.6 M).
