ATHENS - Over the last several years, when you think of elite defense in college football, you think of Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs.

In an era where offense is king, the Georgia Bulldogs continue to play outstanding defense every single season. After building one of the best defenses in college football history last year, leading the Bulldogs to the 2021 national championship, Kirby Smart’s defense is once again one of the best in college football.

No Jordan Davis. No Nakobe Dean. No Travon Walker. No Lewis Cine.

No problem for Kirby Smart and the defensive staff.

In 2019 we labeled Georgia’s dominant defense as the “no-name defense.” Last year, there were big names all over the place. This fall, Georgia’s defense is full of young, hungry players who are having massive seasons so far.

Defensive lineman Jalen Carter is a household name, and most college football fans know who Kelee Ringo is, but that’s about it as far as big games know. Does the average fan know who Chris Smith is? What about Jamon-Dumas Johnson? Possibly, but probably not.

The Bulldog defense were supposed to take a giant step back this season. That’s what we were told by college football analysts throughout the off-season. While this current group isn’t as good as last year’s, you can still make the case they are currently the best defensive in college football. AGAIN.

The Bulldogs are No. 3 in total defense right now, giving up just 247.1 yards per game. They’ve also allowed just five touchdowns so far this season.

Oregon is a top-10 in the country and Georgia held them to just three points. They have two shutouts under their belt. They’re smothering teams each week and have made it look easy at times.

There aren’t a lot of great defenses out there right now, but Georgia’s defense is still capable of shutting down opponents on a consistent basis. It may not be full of big names at the moment, but as a group, it’s hard to find another team playing better than Georgia on defense.

Georgia’s defense led them to a championship last year, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see that happen again.

Georgia’s defense is the standard across college football, and they are playing as well as any team in the country. If they continue to play lights out defense in November, the Bulldogs have a great chance of winning the final game of the season again.
