ATHENS - After a crazy weekend of college football, it’s been “hot take city” across the country as far as who should be the No. 1 team in the country.

According to the polls, and most college football “experts”, Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs are the top team in college football after dominating Vanderbilt 55-0 over the weekend.

Of course, all eyes were in Knoxville to watch No. 6 Tennessee take down No. 3 Alabama for the first time since 2006. After Tennessee’s big win, plenty of college football analysts, including former Georgia Bulldog All-American David Pollack, believe the Volunteers should be ranked No. 1.

So is this all based on the most impressive resume so far? Or based on the eye test?

Let’s take a look at Tennessee’s resume. They beat a then-ranked No. 17 Pittsburgh team on the road in overtime. Cool. That looked like a respectable win until Pittsburgh LOST TO GEORGIA TECH.

The Vols beat a BAD Florida team who was ranked No. 20 at the time. They beat them in Knoxville by five points. I’ll go ahead and guarantee you the Bulldogs beat Florida by a LOT more than 5 points later this month. The Vols gave up 594 total yards against Florida and 453 passing yards to a guy completing only 56% of his passes. Yikes.

The Vols dominated a bad LSU team in Baton Rouge. Solid win. The Tigers were ranked No. 25 at the time.

And last weekend, Tennessee took down Alabama. Their defense gave up 569 total yards and 49 points, but thanks to some terrible football by the Crimson Tide late in regulation, the Vols found a way to win it at the end. It’s obviously a great win, but we have to be honest with ourselves. This isn’t the same Alabama team we’re used to seeing. They’ve taken a massive step backwards, and the Vols caught them at the right time.

Listen, I get the love for Tennessee. It’s a great story. They have the best offense in college football. They have a coaching staff that knows what they’re doing. They’ve got one of the best receiving cores in college football as well.

But is beating Alabama by three points at home better than Georgia’s 46-point victory over the current No. 10 team in the country?

The answer is NO.

If you think Tennessee should be ranked No. 1 based on the eye test, you must have your eyes closed when the Vols are on defense. They’re fun to watch offensively, but their defense has some real issues.

If we’re talking about the most complete team in the country. It’s clearly Georgia. They’ve shown the ability to score at will offensively, and when they’re clicking, they’re really tough to stop. They also have one of, if not the top defense in the country again.

Best offense? Tennessee.

Best win? Georgia over Oregon.

Best resume? Probably Tennessee.

Most complete team? Georgia. The reigning defending champions who are still undefeated.

We’ll see the hot takes about Tennessee for the next few weeks until November 5th. Until then, let’s pump the brakes on Tennessee being No. 1.
