ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are set to take on Vanderbilt for homecoming this weekend.

The Bulldogs, ranked No. 1 and looking to win a second-consecutive national championship, head back home to play “Game 7”, the final home game for Georgia in October.

Narrated by Chris Conley:

“There is nothing like coming back home. Back to the sacred ground where it all began. It’s the sound of that sweet Sanford noise that leads all those that bleed red and black back to where they belong. Between these Hedges lies a rich tradition of unrivaled excellence. demonstrated by these individuals and many others that spans more than a full century. It’s a place where Bulldog fans, old and new, come to rally behind the men who now wear the red and black. With two words. Two simple words. Go DAWGS.”

BULLDOGS WELCOME VANDERBILT TO ATHENS FOR HOMECOMING

Top-ranked Georgia (6-0, 3-0 SEC) returns to Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium Saturday to play host to the Van- derbilt Commodores (3-3, 0-2 SEC). Kickoff will be at 3:30 p.m. ET, and the game will be televised by the SEC Network. Saturday will be Homecoming, and the Commodores have served as the opponent on this day 24 times. The Bulldogs are 20-4 against Vanderbilt on Homecoming and own a 59-20-2 advantage in the overall series. Vanderbilt’s last win over Georgia spoiled 2016 Homecoming, edging the Bulldogs 17-16.

In the history of Georgia football, the Bulldogs are 80-18-2 on Homecoming. Georgia has faced 10 different SEC teams on Homecoming. Along with the game, the traditions include a Friday afternoon parade, former Redcoat Band members and UGA cheerleaders performing with the current squads during the game and at halftime. Also, a Homecoming King and Queen are crowned.

A GLIMPSE AT VANDERBILT

Vanderbilt finishes a stretch of three straight games against top 10 opponents when it visits top-ranked Georgia. The Commodores led No. 9 Ole Miss 20-17 at the half this past Saturday in Nashville before the Rebels stormed back for a 52-28 win. Two weeks ago, the Commodores fell 55-3 to No. 2 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Vanderbilt is in its second season under Clark Lea. The Commodores are averaging 33.2 points a game while allowing 36.8 points a game.

The Commodores are tied for first nationally (with Ohio State, Clemson and Tennessee) having scored on every trip to the Red Zone this season. Vanderbilt is 21-for-21 (17 TDs, 4 FGs) in the Red Zone. In addition, Vanderbilt has registered a takeaway in 15 consecutive games, dating to last season. The 15-game streak is the longest active streak in the SEC and the fourth-longest in the FBS.

GEORGIA RETURNS TO NO. 1

Georgia transitioned from No. 3 in the preseason poll to No. 2 after week one and then to No. 1 in the Asso- ciated Press (AP) poll prior to the South Carolina game. After whipping the Gamecocks 48-7, the Bulldogs assumed the top spot in the Coaches poll as well. The Bulldogs were a consensus No. 1 for the next two weeks. Then Georgia fell to No. 2 in both the AP/Coaches polls following its 26-22 road win at Missouri. After a 42-10 win over Auburn in week six, the Bulldogs reclaimed the top spot in the AP poll. Georgia’s shuffling from No. 1 to 2 and now back to No. 1 over the course of three AP polls hasn’t happened to a school in more than a decade. Florida in 2009 was the last to do it with Alabama as both teams swapped spots in late October. Georgia has been ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in 20 of the past 22 AP polls, with the other two weeks at No. 3.

SETTING THE STANDARD

Despite a record 15 players getting selected in the NFL draft, including five defenders in the first round, Geor- gia’s defense this season ranks as one of the country’s best again. The Bulldogs stand fourth nationally in Scoring Defense at 10.7 points/game. In 2021, Georgia led the nation in Scoring Defense at 10.2 points/game. This marked the third time in school history that Georgia ranked atop that category.
