ATHENS - With no George Pickens or Jermaine Burton on the roster this year, there were “experts” across the country who had question marks about Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldog’s receiving core heading into this season.
If anyone doubted Bryan McClendon’s group heading into the season-opener against Oregon, they turned out to be wrong.
Everyone knew that AD Mitchell was on the verge of a gigantic sophomore season, but he’s not the only former three-star making a name for himself in the college football world.
After a very productive 2021 season where he caught 31 passes for 447 yards and five touchdowns, redshirt sophomore Ladd McConkey is off to a tremendous start to his 2022 season. The Chatsworth, Georgia native is versatile, explosive, and has become a reliable weapon for quarterback Stetson Bennett and Todd Monken’s offense.
Against Oregon, McConkey showed the college football world what he was capable of, catching five passes for 73 yards and one touchdown. He also got the Bulldogs on board on their first possession with a 9-yard touchdown run.
He was barely recruited out of high school, but head coach Kirby Smart pointed out on Monday that his confidence and work ethic has turned him into one of the team’s top offensive weapons.
“Ladd's always been a good player”, Smart said. “That's not something new. He's always been an extremely hard worker. He's dependable. He's conscientious. It's important to him. He gives you everything he's got every day. And the biggest difference is, you know, he has confidence in himself to perform because he performed on big stages last year. And when you're one of these guys that has confidence, talent and you work really hard, then the sky's the limit for you. And he's worked really hard each and every day. And he knows the things he's still got to work on and he's got a lot of those things, too.”
He’s a terrific vertical threat (just ask Auburn), he’s excellent in the short passing game, he can take a jet sweep or end-around for a big gain, and his explosiveness is easy to notice.
He didn’t enter Athens with 5-stars next to his name, but he’s making 5-star plays right now. Look for McConkey to become a household name across college football sooner than later.
