ATLANTA - South Carolina coach Shane Beamer knows a thing or two about the Georgia Bulldogs’ tight ends under Kirby Smart

Beamer was on Smart’s first staff in Athens as the Dawgs’ tight end coach. The Dawgs finished that season 8-5. Beamer left Smart and UGA after the 2017 SEC Championship season for the same spot at Oklahoma.

The second-year coach said he’s impressed with what he’s seeing at the position he used to coach at UGA. Brock Bowers, Darnell Washington and Arik Gilbert - the Dawgs have three of the nation's top tight ends.

“They complement each other well - got a deep skill set,” Beamer said. “They'll be a challenge for us.”

They will be a challenge for nearly everyone they face. Bowers is widely considered the top tight end in college football entering 2022. Washington is one of the top edge blockers in the SEC. Gilbert, who is returning to football after taking 2021 off, made a splash at Georgia’s annual spring game in April.

Todd Hartley, who started as Georgia’s tight ends coach in 2019, has become one of the best collectors of talent at that spot in the country. All of those parts are adding up to Georgia’s tight ends being a lethal.

Beamer glowed about Bowers on Tuesday.

“I remember watching Brock Bowers' tape when I was at Oklahoma the first time I think from a seven-on-seven camp or something like that that he went to. Some of the catches he made in that,” Beamer said. “He’s freakishly talented.”

Bowers proved that against Beamer’s squad a season ago. He pulled in five catches for 53 yards. After a record-breaking freshman season, Bowers has +15,000 odds to win the 2022 Heisman Trophy at the end of the year according to FanDuel.

The Dawgs travel to Columbia to take on Beamer and the Gamecocks on September 17th. Georgia beat South Carolina 40-13 in Athens in 2021.
