ATLANTA - It was a heartbreaking last 25 years for Georgia sports fans, but 2021 was a different story. A story that seemed too good to be true. A story of two champions from the peach state.
We all saw it happen last fall.
Kirby Smart led the Georgia Bulldogs to the 2021 College Football National Championship, their first since 1980. Earlier that fall, Brian Snitker led the Atlanta Braves to a wild 2021 World Series title, their first since 1995.
The Atlanta Braves currently have +600 odds to win the 2022 World Series according to FanDuel.
During Wednesday’s game against the Washington Nationals, the Braves ended their “Championship Week” opening homestand while celebrating Georgia’s big championship season. Bulldog legend and possible first-round pick Jordan Davis, the 2021 Outland Trophy and Chuck Bednarik Award Winner, threw out the game’s first pitch. Quarterback Stetson Bennett is also a noted Braves fan, and was seen at Truist Park throughout their magical playoff run.
The Braves defeated the Houston Astros 4-2 to win the World Series in early November, and the Georgia football program honored the Brave’s championship run during their 43-6 win over Missouri. Former Braves outfielder Joc Pederson made an appearance during Georgia’s victory, as did famous Braves mascot, Blooper.
Former Georgia Bulldog quarterback and 2005 SEC Champion DJ Shockley narrated the Braves’ video that showed highlights from both championship runs.
“Atlanta, and Athens. Separated by 71 miles. Yet unified with championship smiles.”
“Together. Out team’ stories run far beyond just the recent memory. Our love for them run generations deep.”
“Sports light a fire inside all of us and spark a passion that to some, is just unexplainable. Through triumphs and hardship, the love grew ever deeper.”
“But when you’ve seen rock bottom, the mountain top feels ever sweeter.”
“The State of Champions. Dawgs. Braves.”
“Forever Georgia. Forever Champions.”
