ATHENS - The Georgia Bulldogs have hired, wait for it, former Florida Gators coach Mike White.

The move was unexpected, and was announced by Georgia after the school’s Executive Committee went into executive session Sunday night

White just completed his 11th season as a head coach - his 7th in Gainesville. The move by Georgia comes as White and the Gators failed to make the 2022 NCAA Tournament. It is the second time in his career at UF that he’s missed the Big Dance.

Still, the move from Florida to Georgia was unexpected. A slew of jobs in the SEC have come open now, but very few - if any - observers thought Georgia would move to hire an in-conference foe.

White played his college ball at Ole Miss before starting into the coaching world. His first head job was at Louisiana Tech in 2011. Of late, White’s Florida teams have failed to reach the 20-win mark the last three seasons. He ripped off four consecrative 20-win seasons in a row from 2015-16 until 2018-19 at UF.

He got the Gators to the Elite Eight in the 2017 NCAAs. It is hard to know if White’s move is most about his rocky last two years in Gainesville, seeing Georgia as a better opportunity, or, as many insiders have said, that Florida is not as serious about winning right now as Georgia.
