ATHENS - Former Georgia wide receiver Jermaine Burton said on social media Sunday night that he was transferring to Alabama.
Burton announced that he was leaving Kirby Smart’s program last week. The Bulldogs beat No. 1 Alabama 33-18 in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game two weeks ago. Burton had two catches for 28 yards against what will be his new team in that game.
Burton’s decision comes after a lot of movement in college football amongst players who are now eligible to transfer once without penalty in their college careers. However, it is rare that a player would transfer from one program that played for the national title against the other the year before.
It is not abnormal for Burton to transfer. He did so a slew of times in his high school career. He signed with the Bulldogs out of Calabasas, California, but also played or enrolled at Hapeville Charter, Marietta, IMG Academy and Calabasas. Burton had previously been committed to LSU before signing with the Bulldogs.
Burton played in 14 of 15 games for the Bulldogs in 2021. His biggest catch of the year game in the Capital One Orange Bowl against Michigan in the College Football Playoff Semifinal in Miami Gardens. That catch was a 57-yard touchdown from Stetson Bennett that put the Bulldogs up big in that game.
His best perforce overall as a receiver came against Mississippi State in 2020 when he snagged eight balls for 197 yards and two touchdowns. The longest reception of his career was a 73-yarder against UAB. Burton also had a 43-yard run against Tennessee in 2020.
Burton was voted as a third team All-SEC performer in 2021 by league coaches.
