ATHENS - Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs started their journey to the first game of the season on Friday.

By Saturday the program released a small snippet of video of the first day of practice. Traditionally media outlets watch parts of the Bulldogs’ opening practices of the year, but the pandemic and recent surge in delta variant cases caused UGA to close the practice to media for the time being.

So the video is the only action that has been released so far of the 2021 Bulldogs as the zone in on the work that has to be done before the season starts. Unlike a season ago, Georgia will open the season with an out-of-conference foe… Clemson. The Tigers and Bulldogs are set to kickoff on the first Saturday of September in Charlotte. That game will be broadcast on ABC in primetime

Georgia has high expectations coming into the year. The Bulldogs have had four top-ten finishes in a row. Only five schools - Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State and Oklahoma - have done the same thing in that time. Now talking heads, and oddsmakers are expecting the Bulldogs to jump back into the College Football Playoff

What happens from there is anyone’s guess. Still, of those five only Oklahoma and Georgia are returning starting quarterbacks from the 2020 season. And JT Daniels is expected to have a big year, and be the key to the Bulldogs 2021.

“I think his mental growth and maybe his confidence in his relationships with receivers and tight ends has improved,” Kirby said of Daniels. “His relationships with the players, just sheer connection, has improved, which has improved confidence. He feels much more confident that he can demand excellence when he knows somebody personally, rather than having been on zoom with the team for three months this time last year. He did not have that relationship. He is in a much better position to be confident.”

In July, SEC media members voted that the Bulldogs would once again play Alabama in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta at the end of the 2021 regular season. The Tide was picked to win that game.
