ATHENS - The Georgia basketball roster for the 2020-21 season has been finalized. Only six players from last year’s team remain, and they will be united with eight newcomers. Those eight players come as a mix of junior college transfers, graduate transfers and incoming freshmen.

The junior college transfers include Mikal Starks and Jonathan Ned, who are both from Eastern Florida College. They are joined by Tyron McMillan, a sophomore from Kilgore College in Texas.

Andrew Garcia, Justin Kier and P.J. Horne are the three graduate transfers that third-year head coach Tom Crean was able to pick up this offseason. K.D. Johnson and Josh Taylor, both Georgia natives, makeup the Bulldog’s freshman class.

Sahvir Wheeler and Toumani Camara are both sophomores that were regular starters last season. Fellow sophomores Christian Brown, Jaxon Etter and Jaykwon Walton join junior Tye Fagan as the rest of the returning players for Crean.

This is a young and inexperienced roster at first glance. The good news for Georgia is that it is a more experienced team than last year.

The team relied heavily on the superstar talent of Anthony Edwards in their previous season, but with him and Rayshaun Hammonds declaring for the NBA draft, the Bulldogs will have to look elsewhere for leadership and production. They were the team’s two leading scorers last season with 19.1 and 12.9 PPG, respectively.

Wheeler is the likely starting point guard and will probably be expected to step up and make a big impact offensively. He was the team’s third leading scorer with 9.0 PPG. He also led the team with 139 assists. Brown and Walton were both ranked in ESPN’s top 100 recruits for the 2019 class and will compete for more minutes.

There is still some uncertainty as to when the upcoming season will begin, but the NCAA Division I council is meeting to discuss possibilities on Wednesday. What is not uncertain is the 2020-21 Georgia basketball roster. Now the college basketball world awaits a decision.

More to come.
