Georgia got a much-needed commitment from a consensus 4-star QB on Friday night.
Oak Grove (MS) QB John Rhys Plumlee said on twitter that he has committed to play football and baseball at UGA.
“This has been a journey full of blessing,” Plumlee said. “I am committed to continue playing football and baseball at the University of Georgia.”
Who is in Georgia's class of 2019?
UGA coach Kirby Smart retweeted Plumlee’s announcement, seemingly confirming the news. Plumlee is the second dual-threat QB in UGA’s system now (Justin Fields). One look at his Hudl highlight shows his ability to move in the open field as he takes a snap 95 yards for a touchdown.
The Bulldogs have been searching for a solution to the puzzle of having two young 5-star QBs on the roster at the same time, and those two being the only scholarship signal callers in the program.
“That’s a good start for Georgia,” Dawg Post recruiting analyst Matt DeBary said. “They really needed a quarterback. The time of this is a little bit surprising, but it is a big deal for Georgia. They had to have a QB in this class, and that was looking difficult for a while.”
"You needed someone who was north of a corpse for the numbers to move it along, and Plumlee is more than a corpse," DeBary added. "When you look at 2020 I think there has been some hesitancy for UGA to move forward because of the 2019 situation. At least that's what the coaches have been saying to at least some of the 2020 signal callers when the subject comes up. Now you can really figure out what you want to do in 2020 and 2021, and there are a lot of guys out there in those classes who are very good."
The 6-1, 185-pound signal caller is Georgia’s 9th commitment of the class of 2019. Published reports state that Plumlee threw for nearly 1,900 yards and ran for nearly 800. He accumulated 31 touchdowns last fall.
