Will no longer call their rivalry game the Civil War because, well, I'm not sure. Unfortunately this is not from the Onion.

"Changing this name is overdue as it represents a connection to a war fought to perpetuate slavery," Oregon State president Ed Ray said in a statement. "While not intended as reference to the actual Civil War, OSU sports competition should not provide any misconstrued reference to this divisive episode in American history. That we did not act before to change the name was a mistake. We do so now, along with other important actions to advance equal opportunity and justice for all and in recognition that Black Lives Matter."

This reminds me of a late night opening monologue... don't remember which host.

"The Washington Bullets announced today that they are changing their name because they don't want to be associated with crime. From now on they will simply be known as... the Bullets."

First off could people stop saying and spelling Cumming, Cummings.

I figured you of all people would know the city's name and who it was named after. American historic figure William Cumming. You seem to be up on American military history.

Secondly, "civil war" doesn't apply only to the United States. We don't have a monopoly on terms. Lots of countries have had and are having civil wars. Here is the Webster - https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/civil%20war

You may be distraught to hear about (i) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yemeni_Civil_War_(2015%E2%80%93present), and (ii) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syrian_civil_war

Really glad they changed the name.

Is "Clean, Old Fashioned Hate" next on the chopping block?

If they take that away, I wanted the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party back.

Technically, wouldn't the Korean War be a civil war (North against the South)? They are technically still at war (I guess civil war).

No because they are sovereign states.

They'll probably eliminate Old Fashioned and Hate and just call it "Clean" so as not to offend anyone.

The Dixie Chicks are now just The Chicks and now a lot of women are offended at the term chicks. I reckon they'll change that to just "The".

The cancel culture is on a roll.

I think this is just absurd. Since when is civil war a racist term. Are we never gonna be allowed to talk about the civil war because it was a "divisive moment in our history". What about the nullification crisis (tariffs) Vietnam, hell the revolutionary war was pretty freaking divisive since 30% of the population fought for Britain. This canceling of history has to stop. Especially about stupid meaningless thing such as the term Civil War. Please someone try to make the case that saying Civil War is racist. Please just make a fool of yourself like that.

I am so offended. You hurt my feelings.
I don't care what they call their rivalry. It could be battle of the pond or battle of the small area of water....or the non-civil war, or the civil, but passive agressive disagreement, or the everybody wins bc Oregon wins game, or the coming together celebration of Oregon....or Ducks vs Beavers game/match....but if you are offended by their name for their rivalry - even if it has no bearing on your life and you don't have an attachment to it - then they definitely must change it. One person's opinion/feelings who is unrelated to the rivalry is certainly more important than everyone else's combined if there is the threat of social shaming....and we all know social shaming is "positive", and whatever the person doing the shaming thinks or believes is always the correct point of view, and the other person's point of view being shamed is certainly negative. This is how we create "positive" change. Society bullies the "positive" into them - but society also says, do not bully, bc people don't bully people. "Isn't it ironic?"

On a funny note, as much as Cumming and I have disagreed in the past, It think it's funny that you singled us out in same post.

You mean I have no problem with them?

The fact that I think they are the definition of virtue signaling doesn't change that I'm okay with the change..

It's lunacy to pretend that anyone at Oregon or Oregon State ever lost sleep over this rivalry name. if they did, its weird because civil war isn't an "American" thing.

Far less than 1% of America even knew this was the name of that football. I mean what % of America has ever even watched it?

But if it makes you feel good, that's great. It will change no one, not one, person's life. So lets ignore real problems in communities this is "serving."

There is nothing to go back and forth about.

I'm fine with the change.

It's also a fact that it doesn't actually help or move forward any of the real problems.
Jerrodjones

We have agreed on the overall result in every topic...

That's the weird part about the comment from you above. But I feel like we are making progress.
