ATHENS - Kirby Smart and his banged-up Georgia football team are taking advantage of their much-needed BYE week after a tough loss to Auburn over the weekend.
The Dawgs went into the Auburn game with several injured starters including star defensive back KJ Bolden who was missed badly during Georgia’s tight 27-24 loss. The Bulldogs gave up over 190 yards on the ground to Auburn along with two passing touchdowns.
Bolden being out was big and the Georgia’s head coach gave a small injury update to reporters this week.
"He was not dealing with anything before the Alabama game,” Smart said. “He actually cramped around halftime around the touchdown score right before the half, and then had an injury that came up towards the end around the sack, which he never had to go back in because we ended up keeping the ball during that time. In terms of him coming back, we're hopeful to get him back. I don't know what I have to see. He's just gotta recover and go through the doctor's protocol."
Last week Bolden went from questionable on Wednesday night, to doubtful, to “out” before the Dawgs hosted the Tigers. Thankfully Georgia’s star safety will have two weeks to get healthy before their incredibly important game against the Gators.
So far this season Bolden has made 22 tackles, two TFLs, one sack and one INT. He’s a consistent defender on the field who also brings leadership to the Bulldog secondary.
Head coach Kirby Smart added that it’s not just Bolden he hopes makes a return soon.
“I certainly hope we can manage the coming weeks with our players’ health well. It seems that we’re more beat up than we’ve been in the past when I send in injury reports. That’s not because we’re doing more. We’re doing less, but it’s just a tough gauntlet of games and even more to come.”
The Bulldogs will need a healthy roster when they make the quick trip to Atlanta to take on Florida. The Gators are coming off a giant road win at Texas, and like Georgia, they’ll have two weeks to get healthy and regroup for the second half of the season.
