Well Raleigh is now requiring them. This is due to people not obeying rules though, one of our main downtown strips was packed this past weekend like normal. Even tho bars are closed if you sell food you can be open and which they turn into bars past a certain time. People were not wearing masks and not staying 6ft apart so now the city said you have to wear them.

I have not worn a mask except at CostCo because they require it. I am in the believe that your body needs to be exposed to things in order to fight it off. Now that being said, I'm not running up and hugging people or shaking hands. I stay away from other shoppers and use my hand sanitizer when I get back in my car.

FYI- I've done a lot of data analysis on this, and NC is one of only two states to crack the top 15 in terms of total cases in the last month.

That's one ranking you'd rather not be in.

Interesting times.

The constitutionality of forcing people to wear certain garments is dubious at best. I have no issue with a business owner asking me to wear one. The government should not be in the business of tell people to wear one or not. Total overreach

I'm pretty damn smart and don't wear one (unless a business owner requests it.)
Most masks being worn are hand made and either porous as hell, too loose, or too small.
People wearing masks are constantly touching their faces and scratching their noses, while touching everything on the shelves in-between.
The masks that do work are not meant for daily use.
For those wearing surgical masks every day take a look and you'll notice the filtration material is brittle and crumbling.
Unless you wear a new mask every day you are fooling yourself if you believe it's doing anything.

COVID isnt a fine mist, you dont need an N95 for public protection. N95's are for hospital workers exposed to spray and/or long close exposure of known COVID patients. A cloth mask is great to prevent Joe Blow from coughing on you. Tons of data on a "regular mask" being very effective.

Sticking your fingers in your nose, mouth or eye is completely unrelated to the mask effectiveness. Thats just bad behavior.

Even the CDC has gone back and forth about whether wearing face masks is necessary.

Wearing masks are not effective and may even increase the risk of infection and transmission (see my comments above). Also..

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/coronavirus-news-face-masks-increase-risk-infection-doctor-jenny-harries-a9396811.html

https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2020/04/commentary-masks-all-covid-19-not-based-sound-data

The same CDC, by the way, arrogantly decided to push their own COVID test and blocked every other COVID test only to discover a reagent was bad. That snafu delayed testing for weeks. The CDC also inflated # fatalities caused by COVID by 25% in some states. I'll trust my medical education over the agenda driven beurocrats at the CDC any day.

Ask any epidemiologist, masks are effective.

We all have a right to an opinion, but your opinions are just that...opinions. Not one person with real medical knowledge shares your opinion. Masks are effective...period.

You can always find some contrary physician who will post an opinion piece. Doctors used to say smoking wasnt bad......

117K dead as of today (first death was March 1, 2020) and even Trump says 200K dead by Oct 1. Thats US not worldwide. Masks are effective. Your cavalier attitude is your right but its really absurd to keep banging that drum.

Also, there is no correlation between the CDC with masks and testing. Its like saying that if the transmission fails, the brakes must be bad too.

My family and I have been only going out as needed, wearing a mask when in a store and have only gone to grocery store and Home Depot couple times and followed the protocols but as of this past Saturday after wife and I started feeling flu like symptoms got tested and both positive. Luckily two teenage kids are negative so far. We are both healthy otherwise, workout a lot so we will pull thru . I've had flu symptoms except fever but wife has mainly stayed in bed running fever. Since Saturday. Good thing is lungs are clear so far.
This opened my eyes as I was one thinking I can't get this!

I literally gave you sources from medical experts that share my opinion. Good lord.

Remember all these medical experts you like to bow to are telling us that NY subways and mass protests are fine, yet going to the beach is risky.

I wash my hands regularly and respect social distancing. I carry Purell in my truck and use it regularly. I can assure you I practice better hygeine than 90% of people wearing masks. In fact, I see more people with masks consistently break social distancing protocols when engaging in lengthy conversations with their peers all the damn time. People with masks have a false sense of security and break common sense hygeine protocols regularly. They are the ones with cavalier attitudes. Not me.

I believe Dr. Fauci when he says mask provide no benefit and are not necessary.
This position is no longer up to date.

https://www.businessinsider.com/fauci-mask-advice-was-because-doctors-shortages-from-the-start-2020-6

No one's position on anything COVID is up to date a week after it is said.
When Dr. Fauci said masks did not help, early on in the outbreak, that was a CDC opinion. It was a stupid mistake and was ill spoken. My wife and I were watching the news when that statement was first made and I told her immediately that the opinion was BS. It's intuitive that any filter on your face in the presence of a respiratory pathogen would provide some benefit. In addition to intuition, I have a degree in biology and a medical degree and I knew better. Unfortunately, months after that stupid comment, people are still being harmed by it. If you recall, the total comment was (paraphrased) . . . masks won't protect you AND our medical personnel need them more. That combined comment made no sense and was very telling as to what generated that nonsensical remark.

ALL politics aside, you cannot cry on here about wanting football (and many things more important) to open up and not be wearing a mask. We certainly know that the ONLY way to start opening up is to maximize social distancing and masks while we slowly move forward. Instead of that, in large we have abandoned social distancing, mocked PPE and jumped into large groups unnecessarily. We are now seeing the results of such behavior and all of our progress is likely to be lost.

We should hope that sports events can initially be played without fans--if that works, we can still see what the promising DAWGS and Braves can do from the comfort of home. Once a vaccine is developed, then we can talk about opening in a larger way. Putting 100,000 people in any group, including stadiums, etc, will derail the progress we have made with getting people back to work. Wear a mask or keep to yourself--there is no apolitical reason not to do so.

One thing I want to say is I respect ssidedawg even though we disagree a lot. Our debates rarely ever become personal. It would be cool if one day we get the opportunity to sit down together over a beer or bourbon and do this in person. I bet it would be friendly and civil, albeit spirited. I try to never judge someone based on what they type on a keyboard. I have a feeling we would part as friends. And yes, I would wear a mask out of respect for sside.

Yep.

LOL, its all good and I do acknowledge that the instructions have changed over time, but that time is 4-6 months. There isnt a playbook for this as this hasnt happened in modern times to this extreme. We have had viruses threaten to do this but they never swept the US like this one. This virus hit hard and fast. And the information and guidance is having to keep up. Not easy.

Also, Bourbon....

Only wear a mask at work, and that's mainly because admin feels it's aesthetically pleasing for the patients to see..and that's no problem. Off work, I rarely wear one.
If it's required to wear in the stadium, sure, I'll wear one.
However, if it's too hot, I can't see security not allow us to remove the mask occasionally. Breathing carbon dioxide plus extreme temperatures is not a good mix and can lead to disorientation.

I don't understand this.

The virus may have been unknown, but PPE is not. COVID is transmitted through droplets and has been consistently known... its not the first to be transmitted that way.

The idea that one of the most renowned epidemiologist in the world ever thought not wearing a mask around was okay is hard to understand.

I've heard this a lot, so I'm not responding only to one person on this. I generally stay out of these discussions, but I'm feeling crabby today.

If the government tells me I need to walk into a burning building or jump off the Brooklyn bridge or doubles my taxes, then I'm going to object. If the government tells me I need to go out in public wearing nothing but a thong, then I'm going to object (as would everyone else).

But if the government tells me that wearing an inexpensive mask MIGHT slow the spread of a disease that's killed over 100,000 of my countrymen already, then I'm going to f'ing shut my mouth and put on a mask.

I absolutely don't get the personal freedoms argument in this situation, nor will I ever. I don't believe the government is in cahoots with companies that produce masks and conspiring to drive their profitability. I don't believe the government wants to tell anyone to wear a mask for any reason, so therefore if they do it then I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming its for the greater good. If they change their mind tomorrow and say we don't need to wear masks, then I'll take mine off and not gripe and whine about how my life was forever changed. And I don't believe telling me to wear a mask is a slippery slope that will lead to the government exercising more control over my life.

I've never heard so many nonsensical conspiracy theories as I have in the last three months. I really thought we were better than this.

Been with this stuff since the beginning. I've learned, after SEVERAL encounters, that people pretty much have their minds made up about wearing or not wearing masks and/or gloves. No matter what facts you offer, they're convinced that wearing or not wearing them is the safest & smartest thing to do. So there's no point. As long as it doesn't affect me, then I'm generally okay with whatever.

If they want to stay home from the restaurants, the movies, the shopping, the rioting/burning/looting demonstrations, and even the football season, I'm good with that.

25% of the worldwide death totals from Covid 19 are in our country (130,000 and rising). South Korea has 1/7th our population and has had in the neighborhood of 3000 deaths--that should compare to 21,000 deaths here. Is that because we're the greatest country on Earth or because we are by and large the most stupid? Starts to explain our science and math scores, lack of insurance, level of drug dependency, depression, etc. Let's keep it up and become even greater.
Bulldawg1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
since you are talking about math and numbers, you are assuming the exact same percentage of initial hosts/carriers of the virus in both countries when stories of this broke.
1. That is impossible to know for certain either way.
2. It's illogical assume the exact percentages for every country and state and people group and the virus acting the exact same across the world with all climates and people.

But, whatever fits a narrative is truth?

This.

America hangs its hat on "freedom" which is fine until freedom means being as dumb as possible because you can. Arrogance and ignorance are part of freedom but why go that route.

And you are assuming that taking certain precautions, testing quarantines etc werent a superior choice?

So are you suggesting Koreans arent as susceptible?

Seoul Korea has almost 9 million people which is almost a million more than NYC. They live as crowded as NYC. Yet the numbers are incredibly lower. Why?
