I tend to agree, but because things can happen which are out of Georgia's control when it comes to the NCAA Tournament, I'll be a little bit more granular.

Goal #1: at least 10 non-conference wins.

This would mean winning all 8 "gimme" games and beating at least 2 other teams. Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, and Grand Canyon are all gettable.

Goal #2: .500 in conference play.

Combined with goal #1, this gets us to 19 wins.

Goal #3: beat at least one of Kentucky, Tennessee, Auburn, or Alabama.

Kentucky, to me, is the most likely. It's at home and early in conference play. Tennessee or Alabama would have to happen on the road...

I'm not pretending any of these are easy. Goals shouldn't be easy. Do all three? The NCAA Tournament takes care of itself.

11-2 is the ceiling I have for this team, I think we go 10-3, and worst case scenario 9-4. I think we lose to Marquette and St John's for sure, and a potential loss to GCU, but as I went in depth for that game, I think we win that game I am pretty confidently. The fourth potential loss could be Georgia Tech. I think we are a better team and I am not too worried, but it is a rivalry game and it's at tech, where they want revenge for last year, so who knows.

.500 in conference play is pretty reasonable. I have us going 11-7 (best case scenario), but that is with us not losing any games we are supposed to lose, which obviously does not happen in college basketball, and winning a few big games. 9-9 definitely is the floor though.

Then I have us winning that kentucky game at home.

So doable season, we need to be a tourney team this year, lots of momentum in our direction.

we are overdo to have a team gel.
sometimes it just happens.
win some close games, gain confidence and the sky can be the limit.
we have all seen this happen in sports.
it actually seems to happen everywhere except georgia basketball.
its our turn.
we have talent, depth, height, size and a nice mix of youngsters and vets.
its going to happen someday.

maybe this year?

maybe. I am really anti-CMW. Purley from an X's and O's stand point I am not sold on him. However he has done a good job in his career at doing more with less, or bigger picture speaking less. I am not sure if it is the motivation, how they prepare for games, if his assistant coaches play a big part, but he has shown he can make it to the tournament so maybe I am being too critical. I think this team has the change to make it to march, I would say our ceiling is round of 32, but you never know once you make it there. Making the tournament this year regardless would be considered a success, anything less I think would be below expectations. It is a higher bar this year, so with that comes more repercussions if we cannot perform.
BallDawg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
yeah, if I had to pick one thing to really home in on, would be that number 20. 20 wins seems to be the bar to make it to march from the SEC. with a more competitive sec this year 20 wins and at least 1 win in the SEC tournament gets the job done.

Maybe? My phrasing probably made it sound like the tournament is a given if we do those three things, but I'm not so sure. Doing those three things, at a minimum, would absolutely put us squarely on the bubble, and it would make me feel good about the program. The tournament "takes care of itself" depending on how full the bubble is any given year.

"Make the tournament" is too squishy a goal for my tastes. Goals are things you have direct control over, and unless you think UGA is winning the SEC tournament (I don't), there's some amount that is out of your hands.

That said, if it's tournament-or-bust for you, I'm not mad! Believe me, I'm as ready as anyone on this board to see this team dancing again...

Isn't it about damn time to expect more of this program? Athens proximity to elite talent and with NIL, it's now legal to buy players, there should be no reason this team shouldn't be in the tournament every year.

Sadly, expecting to be on the bubble is expecting more of the program. It hasn't happened in a decade.

That said, I hear you. I think it's very fair to expect more of the program over the next few years. I hold that the goals I laid out are appropriate for this year's team as it is constructed.

It's hard to be a UGA basketball fan. We have virtually no history of success and a ton of history of failure or falling short of expectations. We are perpetual rainbow seekers. We always "look on the bright side of life". We perpetually hope that our support, our fandom, will pay off. We have been so close several times - a Final Four with Durham, success in 2 years under Tubby, the potential of the 2002-2003 team under Harrick, some minor success under Fox, the NIT tourney success last season.... I know a lot of people have not completely bought in to Mike White, but this team has more talent than it has had since probably that 2002-2003 team. Now, can White develop the chemistry that is so elusive?

My personal expectations of this team are pretty high. White has done the first thing a coach can do to lead to success - he's accumulated talent. That's the first thing he controls. Next, his system has to take advantage of the talents he has accumulated. That remains to be seen. I still don't have a grasp of what White wants as the identity of his team. What is his signature style of play? What he's doing now is very different from what he did at La. Tech. Maybe he feels he can't play that way in the SEC. Maybe he's never felt he had the talent to play that style either at UF or UGA. We may learn as much about White this season as the team itself.

That was perfect.

For me, I just want to see a continued improvement trajectory. And that is objectively measured by W's and L's.

I hesitate to put a 'tournament or bust' metric on us - I can't decide if the addition of Texas and Oklahoma will tighten the NCAA funnel for us, or create more spots for the conference.

last year we had the exact same sec record as the year before.
we did get a bid to the nit because some said they would not play
we made a run witch was fun but again it sounds like some are ok with not making the dance

We made the most of the opportunity we were given last year. I don't really care how we got it. And I think we unanimously want to be in the NCAAT.

I can already see the excuses that will be made for this team if it does not work out like we cant it to
Mike White still has not proven a dang thing at UGA
this is a big year

I barely played, and I've never coached, so I don't know if I'm allowed to post, but I'll do so anyway.

Sometimes people confuse "excuses" and "reasons." Sometimes they can even overlap.

If you take the fact that Georgia made the NIT last year, and then consider the roster improvements we've made, it might seem obvious that we should make the tournament.

But other teams are improving as well. The most teams a conference has ever put into the dance is 11. Here are the teams that appear to be obviously better than us going into the season (in no particular order):
  • Tennessee
  • Auburn
  • Kentucky
  • Alabama
  • Texas A&M
  • Arkansas
  • Florida
  • Texas

Even if you're wildly optimistic and believe the SEC can put 11 teams in, that leaves Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Georgia, Mizzou, and South Carolina to fight over 3 more bids (and yes, I'm assuming Vandy and Oklahoma will be terrible).

Georgia's schedule is challenging. Of our 11 games against currently ranked opponents, 8 are on the road.

My point? It is plausible that our roster has improved as much as we think it has and that we could be on the outside looking in. The SEC is that tough.

If you want to call that excuse-making, I can't stop you, but I don't think it's out of the question that a very good Georgia team could once again miss the tournament. That would be incredibly disappointing, but I'm not yet convinced it would drive a stake through the heart of the Mike White era.
