about problems I saw and described with the team early on? I doubt it. Never helps to ignore glaring weaknesses to bask in momentary success. You don't get better by heaping praise on and failing to correct issues. White has his work cut out for him to save the season, if it can be saved, and to correct the roster issues for next year. And right now we have 1 signee. He's a good one, but we are gonna need a lot of upgrades to the roster. We are getting basically nothing from the post; our perimeter shooting is spotty at best; our backcourt has been short-handed all year. And defensively? Well, we aren't athletic enough or strong enough to play aggressive defense for 40 minutes. There have been times when we have been carved up like our opponents were using Ginsu knives. We have not developed an identity as yet under White. We need to....

Interesting article. I agree with some of it and disagree with some. IMO we should have beaten Arkansas. They are way down this year. They are struggling badly. I don't think they are particularly talented. But our roster has problems, and the only way to correct them in the current climate of college hoops is to throw money at the problem. The problem at UGA is that we have never prioritized basketball. But if we really want to be competitive, we have the means to do so if we choose to do so. Or we can continue to wallow in mediocrity. I think Demary has a big future in Athens - if we can keep him. Some of these kids are on 1 year contracts....

I don't agree. I think he can be very successful in Athens, but we have to prioritize the program. We have to spend the money. It's our choice - mediocrity or more....

I wish I had insight into our high school recruiting philosophy/strategy and then the default portal/transfer recruiting philosophy.

It is very concerning to me we have exactly one high school player committed for next year - albeit a very, very good one.

If Butts Mehre spent the money to go get White, and then short changed him once he got here, well, I quit.

Exactly. There is no reason to spend big money on a coach if you don't give him what's necessary to succeed.

You're not wrong. We beat even one of UT Bama Ark were not having this convo. The fact we did drop them all and now a fiver has me searching for answers.

We are getting zero after our first 6-7 players. Conference grind has exposed our weaknesses and deficiencies.

So, I'm just looking at the roster and the future. I have concerns. On paper White and staff were recruiting bona fides. Proven. Successful.

So, what the hell is going on with recruiting? IS there a $$$ problem per Griffith? Is it just White was left with a smoldering roster crater (he was) that is going to take longer to correct? Are we so far gone that UGa hoops is in Vanderbilt football permafrost?

I don't know the answer. Winning some remaining games would ease my anxiety.

"Better players cost more money, and the Bulldogs won't climb much higher in the SEC without a bigger payroll."

I just don't buy it. Would throwing money at the program help? Of course. But it's not fair to blame it all on money.

If you take the Power 5 conferences + the Big East, you know how many currently have a longer tournament appearance drought than Georgia? 5 out of 76. If Nebraska keeps doing what they're doing, it'll be 4 after this season.

You know how many have a longer tournament win drought than Georgia? 2 out of 76. And if Nebraska gets in and wins, it'll be 1.

You can't convince me 70+ teams have a "bigger payroll" than Georgia. You can be a good program even if you're not resourced like Duke or UNC.

It's about money, yes, but it's also about commitment. Georgia stuck with Mark Fox for way too long because it was easy - he was winning enough and he wasn't embarrassing the school.

They handed out the best seats in the arena to football fans and ticket resellers and kicked the loyal basketball fans to the rafters because it was easy and because it kept the "important" people happy.

They made a lazy hire in Tom Crean. They made another lazy hire (in my opinion) in Mike White, though I'm not giving up on him yet.

That said, he has to show something. Compare the shots other teams are getting with the shots we're taking, Look at the assist numbers in the South Carolina game - they're laughable. He's being out-coached as much as he's being out-talented. You know what you get for being competitive in losses? Zilch.

I wish just once these journalists would ask a tough question or two...that they'd even kinda try to hold the athletic administration responsible for the sad state of affairs. Instead, they insist we're making progress (our record is identical to last year) and suggest that, if we just cared more...donated more, it would all fix itself.

One more, then I'm done:

"Football is the engine that drives the revenue train and pays for most all of the other Georgia sports along with those free bobblehead, hat and jersey giveaways that keep students coming to support the basketball team."

It's been a few years since I looked it up, but Georgia Basketball is profitable. This is lazy journalism at its finest. And you know what would happen if the basketball program got better? It'd be more profitable and the school would make more money. Suggesting investing more would take money from other programs is ridiculous.

Rant over. Go Dawgs. Beat Florida

Well, that's just wrong. Myself and others have repeatedly asked that we prioritize basketball and commit the resources to win. It is far from a new problem. Before a new season, you always hope that the players we brought in will turn out to be better than expected - able to make us competitive. You always give the staff and roster the benefit of the doubt before the season and hope for the best.

Look at the turnaround Paris has done at USCe. Unlike the old days where it could take years to build a competitive roster, the portal offers the chance to be competitive immediately. It's about evaluation and spending the money to bring in the right players.

I agree with pretty much all of that, particularly about Fox and Crean. Paris is doing a great job at USCe. His team plays hard and smart. He slapped a zone on us when we weren't expecting it, and it won them the game. We are being beaten in the portal for guys who could make a drastic difference at UGA. Part of the problem I think is that kids over the years have seen that we haven't prioritized basketball. They want to go somewhere where basketball is important, all other things being equal. The portal can be the equalizer. I'm not ready to give up on White. My only problem is that we have no real identity so far. I like a running game, a fast break style, a pressing defensive style. We play at a quick pace largely because we shoot early in the shot clock. That's not the best way to go.
