Dennis Gates at Cleveland St. Two names to keep an eye on....

Lukewarm on both. Analytics for Cleveland State aren't great. Murray State guy benefits a bit from his predecessors. Not sure either would be the guy to turn this place around.

Could we make a big swing for Kelvin Sampson or Brad Underwood? I think we should look at Valentine at Loyola-Chicago, Todd Golden at San Fran, Mark Pope at BYU, Wes Miller at Cincy, and Niko Medved at CSU. Todd Golden may be a sneaky good pick. Has SEC ties.

I would also look at NBA assistants Darvin Ham, Kenny Payne, Dave Bliss, and Will Hardy. At the college level, I would look at assistants Jerome Tang of Baylor, Brian Michaelson of Gonzaga, and Jonas.

I'd take Rob Lanier as long as Jarvis is on his staff.

Dave Bliss has never been a head coach. So that takes him out.

You really have to explain why an NBA assistant who has never been a HC, many of whom having never recruited, would be a better choice than a college assistant who has never been a HC.

Also, in keeping with our AD's affinity for coaches from USC, we seem to be eyeing Andy Enfield, as well. With his history at FGCU and his style of play, I could get behind him.

I don't see Sampson as a viable target, with his history of getting IU in trouble and getting a show cause, but he is a good coach. I wouldn't dismiss McMahon at Murray St so easily. Having played under Buzz Peterson at App St, he is from the Dean Smith coaching tree. He was an assistant under Steve Prohm during his success at Murray St and took over when he left for Iowa St. He's done very well at Murray.

Does anyone honestly think Mark Pope, a Mormon, would leave BYU? That's gotta be his dream job. Wes Miller just got to Cincy, so I don't see him leaving so soon. Some of the others you mentioned are interesting. We shall see. I'm sure this search started weeks ago.

Pope has been a bunch of places. It would not shock me to see him go elsewhere. Latest rumors are that Enfield has interest in the Maryland job. I didn't include him because of that. You are probably right on McMahon. Some chance that he lands at Louisville. Cleveland State lost last night. Not sure they make tournament. May dim Gates' star some.

We are likely to run into a bunch of folks with zero interest. Anything is possible. We may be forced to higher an assistant at some level. I would be perfectly fine hiring an NBA assistant if they could hire an elite recruiting staff. Musselman started in CBA and NBA and has adjusted just fine. It is going to take a special person to make it work here. If the guy has the credibility of a recent NBA ring, can sell the NBA experience (e.g. with Popovitch) or is a wizard at something (scouting, development, analytics, etc), I am all for it.

Enfield is originally from PA, so that might explain his interest in MD, but money talks. I watched a bit of that Cleveland St game and was not overly impressed with Gates' team. Musselman was a HC at Nevada and had been an assistant at AZ St and LSU before he got the Ark job, in addition to his NBA and CBA work, so he had a track record. Enfield has been an NBA assistant as well.

I hope we go for someone with Southeastern connections!! The last two( Fox and Crean ) did not recruit Atlanta or Georgia very well!! He had better get into this state and get the BEST PLAYERS then he will succeed IMO!! You have to know our culture, Plain and Simple!! We have a bunch of former players in the Atlanta, Macon, Savannah areas who are chomping at the bit to help make contacts with players, HS coaches, parents and friends to aid recruiting this whole State!! The coaches just need to get to know these folks and MAKE IT WORK!! HOW GOOD would Auburn be WITHOUT FOUR of their STARTERS FROM GEORGIA?? IT CAN BE DONE!!! Every year there are between 35-50 players from Georgia on various teams playing in the NCAA and. NIT TOURNAMENTS!! The last TWO coaches were like FOREIGNERS to the HS Coaches, Players and Former Players in Georgia!! I know because I have talked with a good number of them personally!!! GO DAWGS!!!
