It's a crap shoot. I would have predicted high achievement at IU coming off that Dayton success.

So my mother went to Indiana, Dad went to Georgia, and have loved both deeply as long as I can remember. So this assessment is with some definitely Crimson colored glasses on.

Archie had to go. It just wasn't working. There is a segment of the Indiana fans with unreasonable expectations, kind of living in the past. But Archie wasn't living up to even reasonable expectations. No NCAA tournaments, with an asterisk last year, and no seasons above .500 in the big ten. If he had even snuck in to the tournament barely this year he'd have been kept.

Separate from Archie there is the macro problem of what's gone wrong with IU. Kelvin Sampson was a great coach and a huge problem otherwise. You can make a good argument they should not have fired Crean. But sperate from who the coach is, there has been a complete failure at the administrative level.

The university president McRobbie doesn't care much about athletics. Over the years Millions and Millions of big ten network dollars have been funneled out of the athletic department. The compliance department was very overbearing in the wake of Kelvin Sampson, to the point of making Crean and Archie's lives much harder than they needed to be.

I think some of has been corrected. The old AD and now the new one as well has fought and got new facilities. The compliance depart is supposedly much better. IU will pay the next coach top 15 money nationally. There are reasons to hope.

Indiana is also a great location recruiting wise. Now this is not the same as Georgia's situation in football. With AAU basketball recruiting is much more national. I think IU has hurt itself in Archie's tenure by focusing too much on locking down the state and not finding the right guys wherever they were.

I'm not saying IU can or should return to a basketball super power. But can the right guy get them to be a consistent top 25? I certainly hope so. I think the resources are there.

Fallout from firing Miller continues w/ a player exodus:

Indiana planning to hire Mike Woodson as their new head coach. He compiled a 315-365 (46.3%) record w/ the Atlanta Hawks/New York Knicks in eight+ years. Woodson is 63 years old, was born in Indianapolis, and played for the Hoosiers from 1976-'80. Indiana also hiring Thad Motta as assistant AD for men's basketball administration (some of y'all may recall he turned down the UGA HC job in 2018).

The Hawks say good luck with that.

The Golden Age of Hoosiers' Basketball was the Bob Knight era. Their "Number 2 Golden Age" was the Tom Crean Era.
