I just want to know that the community thinks about the direction of the program. Personally, I see inconsistencies...one game we look unbeatable, the next night look like we wouldn't beat Athens Academy...I put inconsistency on the coaching and staff. I know this is only year three but this program looks like it has no direction. Crean is highly paid and what to show from it? He had the best player in college basketball last year and they still got dominated in the SEC. it showed a lot the other night when they beat Kentucky at home and stormed the court...it shows that the standard for winning is low...they celebrated like they beat tournament team. That was not a tournament Kentucky and we were about to cut the nets down. Well, enough of my rant...what say you?

Crean has a history of turning around his other 2 head coaching jobs in 4 years? And UGA has a dismal history(Fox got 9yrs of dismal postseasons)? Unless year 4 is not an improvement over this, year 3, he will get 5 seasons. If no Dance in year 5, move on to a younger up-n-comer, with fingers crossed.

When we started 0-4 in SEC play I was in favor of firing him then and certainly at the end of this season.

I'm willing to let this season play out.

I think his dye is cast. You see what you're going to get now and year 4 or5. It may vary a few wins here or there. But he's just not the answer and we should pull off the band aid so we don't get another protracted Fox regime on a road to nowhere.

Let's see how it goes the next few weeks, but I see it playing out like this....

There are currently 6 teams under .500
OlMs 3-4
AU 3-5
UGA 2-5
A&M 2-5
SC 1-3
Van 0-5

Those are our next 5 opponents, I think we'll win 2 or 3. If we were to go 0-5 against that, I fire him right there on the way to the locker room after the Vandy loss. We'll prolly get to 4-8, maybe even 5-7, before losing 5 of 6 down the stretch to finish 5-13 or 6-12. One thing about going 2-16 in year one is it's easy to show improvement year over year.

Crean will likely get Year 4, and I know his track record at MU & IU, but if you look at the current roster plus signees..... we don't look to be any better in year 4.

I'm a little less optimistic...I think we only have 2 more wins the rest of the season. I think we hang a 0 on all the road games remaining. It's just hard for me to grasp paying this bozo so much money for 3-4 SEC wins a year. I agree with you on showing improvement after year one lol. It would be one thing to look for Improvement/excitement for year 4 "if" we had a roster to get excited about but it's a naw dawg for me. Crean is showing to be a "big" name coaching hire in name only. Dude is saying we gonna shoot the 3...I guess he ain't lying there...but he never said we were actually gonna make those shots. I challenge anyone to give me a reason for encouraging for a year 4 under the current staff? You can't say...just because he did it at his past 2 coaching gigs...the dude had talent. Can't say that for this roster and recruits.

I can't believe people are accepting losing. Crean should be fired after every loss. There is no excuse for losing. None. Any average coach would be winning all of these games. I guess this explains the history of Georgia basketball?

I'm not to "fire him" yet, though I was inches away after the Auburn loss. I hope that hot garbage turns out to be the low point of the season.

Opinion alert: the occasional flashes of what he wants the team to be are what keep me on the line. The non-conference (against lesser competition) was fun. The LSU game (despite the loss) was fun. The Ole Miss game was fun. The first half of the Florida game was fun. UK wasn't super fun, but we won the game. That's not nothing.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see what's missing: talent and size. Both are on Crean's shoulders, and I will only make one excuse for him: Nic Claxton made a bad decision, and that's not Crean's fault. If he comes back, last year's team probably wins 5-6 more games and Nic might be on an NBA roster right now.

That said, Wheeler, Johnson, and Camara are young, and those are guys you can build a team around. Unfortunately, though, size is still lacking, and next year's class looks lackluster. Crean really needed to get Jabari Smith or Michael Foster to Athens, and it looks like he missed on both.

I do think he should get year 4, and while this will never be made official, to me it's tournament or bust.

What Crean needs are boosters and Happy Meal Bags!

Not sure what the deal is at UGA but the behind the scenes backing is what I think is the problem.
Not sure if that is on Crean or not but he needs to be lobbying.

You have to have players! 5 of them. Not 1.

I'm not advocating for Happy Meal Bags. But, if your gonna run with the big boys you better have 5 that can shoot. We have'nt had 5 shooters on any one team EVER!

See my point.
Buy Them and They Will come

You mean all those Georgia kids going to Auburn to play basketball aren't going for the education, culture, and rich basketball tradition?????
Bright Idea
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Georgia kids avoid UGA basketball because it appears that only a handful of fans care enough about it to want to play there regardless of the coach. It is clearly a vicious cycle. AAU coaches probably tell their kids Georgia administration doesn't care either so there will be no MCDonalds bags.

I get your point Bright, but Georgia fans DO care. We packed the Steg last season to see a one and done lead a team to garbage results.

We haven't had anything close to consistent non-garbage in two decades. Why should the fan base care? They will only eat so much of a Butts-Mehre s**t sandwich.

It's chicken or the egg - if UGA were consistently non-garbage with flares of NCAA tourney performance, you'd see the interest in spades.

Well, if we limp to the finish line playing like this and finish 5-13 or worse.... 100% FIRE HIM. There's no defending the job he's done. .

Yeah, I take back most of what I said. This team is awful and regressing. Two more wins would be shocking. We just made South Carolina look like a top 10 team.

I know Crean isn't going anywhere. No chance. But any hope I had that we'd see improvement is pretty much gone after that.

Welcome back to reality Stevie lol. Idk they keep mailing it in like this it will be real hard for Brooks to keep this hack job another season.

No chance Crean goes?? You don't believe 2-16 to 4-14 would get him fired this year? If we 0-fer it from here, including a loss to Vandy, I have to think he'd be fired.

We should win 2 of next 3 (OleMs, @AU, Vandy) BUT if we lose those 3.... he should not finish the season.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Hey, I'm wrong a lot, so hopefully I am here too. But yeah, I stand by what I said. I don't think he gets fired for any on-court results this year.

It's too bad, because as several vastly improved teams in the SEC demonstrate, hiring a good coach just doesn't have to be that hard...
Dawg-E-Dawg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
At best I see 2 more wins...and that's being really insanely optimistic. Still that only leave Crean with 4 total SEC wins. He loses to Vandy...it's time to take the trash out. And I mean everybody has got to go...assistants, strength coach, trainer, and hell even the receptionist. I'm talking scorched earth type cleaning house.

Having worked in collegiate athletics I know that year 3 is the b-hole tightening year. You either show improvement or rip the bandaid off. 4 SEC wins is hardly improvement. I wouldn't be surprised is Brooks is already throwing feelers out there considering Crean wasn't his hire.

Anyone happen to know Creans buyout clause?
Bright Idea
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I just don't believe that behind the scenes this will be Brooks' call. It will have to end up so obviously bad, and it is trending that way, that UGA would appear foolish to keep Crean. The roster is full of transfers who have no chemistry and give little effort. He is handicapped but you have to coach up what you bring in and Crean is doing a poor job of that. Every game is the same, no improvement.

7.2M if fired this year drops to 3.2M next year and 1.6M after year five.

Oof. The Georgia Way is NEVER going to eat a $7.2mil buy-out. For basketball. That is essentially equivalent to the WHOLE men's basketball budget. This is disastrous all around.

$7mil ain't what it once was but you're prolly right.

These buyouts are ridiculously slanted towards the coaches.
It'll never happen but W's should matter. I don't see why there couldn't be a clause that reduces the buyout if you win less than "X" games in conference... Maybe I'll contact Jimmy Sexton bout that

This mofo looking like he's gonna be around 10-44 through 3 seasons. We will have paid him over $10,000,000 and would have to give him $7,000,000 more to go the hell away. Just ridiculous.

We're in a 5 game stretch against teams with a combined 15-31 record. It's fun to win and we could easily beat A&M to finish this stretch. Win 2 or 3 of those last six and then maybe we're getting somewhere.
Nostradawgus
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The rubber is certainly about to hit the road. We have feasted exclusively on sub-.500 conference record teams. But we did feast.

If this team could somehow scratch out a 4-3 close to finish .500 would I believe put us on ncaa bubble heading into tourney play. There would be at least two quality wins against ranked teams and we'd be "hot" heading into post season.

But oof the close is about to get steep.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, 2-5 certainly looks like most likely scenario which still gets us to 14-11 and 7-11 which is still an improvement from last year when we went 16-16 and 5-13 in league play.

Here's to hoping we can beat LSU, USC, A&M and steal one from UF/Mizzou/Bama or UT.

Not confident in that, but it .500 in league play would be a big step at this point
Every man should believe in something, I believe Florida sucks
Nostradawgus
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If this team is poised and developed enough to beat A&M, LSU and Suck - and we absolutely should - I believe they WILL steal one of the other four.

But they can't play like they did last night in ANY remaining games.

Not sure what to think at this point. I think Crean needs to finish strong or he is in jeopardy and if he survives this year; next year is kind of a do or die for him. Talked to a guy at a game I went to last year who was a season ticket holder. He felt like Crean had a multi-year "pass" to get things done. I think that is the case if he shows significant improvement year over year. We had the #1 overall NBA pick and that got us nowhere. Like others, I'm perplexed why Crean isn't recruiting more post guys. Still if Brooks wants to move on from Crean there won't be a list of suitors ready to take over and again we will be in complete rebuild mode from the ground up. Very frustrating to see Bama, Auburn, and Tennessee make the commitment to hoops and make some real strides while our basketball program seems to be at the lowest point since I've been following UGA hoops(1985).

Let's think about what Fox left Crean in his 1st year - the seniors were Turtle Jackson, Wilridge, Ogbeide, Christian Harrison, Connor O'Neill and Mike Edwards. Other than Ogbeide, there's not a single other senior that was worth a crap. The only juniors were Tyree Crump and Jordan Harris - as much as I like those 2, you aren't gonna win much with them.

Our upperclassmen absolutely stunk. A program like ours has to have solid upperclassmen because we are rarely gonna sign those instant impact guys. Losing Claxton after his sophomore year killed any chance we had to improve in the only year we were gonna have Anthony Edwards. Ngumeze was a disaster and had to get cut; Toppin, who was a little off, left; Hammonds, whose game was hit and miss, left.

Fagan is the only junior to come up through the program. Walton, Peak and Howard left after last year after barely making a dent. The biggest problem Crean faces is getting solid kids in the program and keeping them; that coupled with a serious lack of recruiting in GA is holding us back. We just don't have much talent right now. We have some contributing sophomores who will be juniors next year who will I think be ready to take a big step. But we need outside shooting and a presence in the middle to make progress. A JUCO center would be nice.

I wouldn't bring back Starks or Ned myself; they give us nothing. Crean still has a lot of work to do in this recruiting class. Will Kier, Garcia or Horne be back for the extra year? Who knows? KD is a great addition; we need more like him with a tough attitude defensively and who can pull the trigger from the perimeter. It's a tall order. I don't see any way we fire Crean after this season. Next year is a different story. I have been very underwhelmed by Coach Dollar's recruiting results. He needs to go IMHO, and we need an aggressive recruiter with a base in GA. Linehan is supposed to be a defensive guy, but our defense is sieve-like at times. We have to shore that up. I predict some changes to the staff in the off-season.
