Does anyone see a scenario where Fields is put at flanker does an end around with Fromm pitching him the ball and if the defense comes up he throws it, if they don't he runs it. Seems this would be a defensive coordinator's nightmare Comments?

That's an interesting idea, and I'm sure our staff has thought about something like that, but I'm not a huge fan of trick plays. They're great maybe once or twice a season - like the flea flicker vs Miss St last year, but they can backfire as well - like the onside kick vs S.Carolina last year. And if Fields is split out wide, the opposing defense/DC would expect something like that anyway, IMO.

I think a better option with Fields is just a straight up set. This would obviously depend on DRob getting his waiver approved, but I like the idea of DRob wide on one side with Mecole wide on the other. We could be in 21 personnel with Swift/Zeus/etc at TB, or in 11 group with Godwin in the slot. Seriously, there's not a DC in America that wouldn't be in a 2-cover against either formation. So if you're Fields, you either hand to Swift, hit the TE or the slot on a quick route, or take off running yourself. If they try to disguise it, or show anything other than cover 2, hit the 9 route. Talk about fish in a barrel.

UGA OC Jim Chaney:

"[Justin Field's] a competing son-of-a-gun and he's also a hell of a good football player."

"Justin's got all the physical tools. He looks and acts the part of the No. 1 player in the country coming out of high school."

"Justin's ability to run the ball is exceptional, but we don't have a vast amount of depth at that position right now. If you start running quarterbacks, you're putting them in harm's way a little bit more. You have to be real conscious of that."

"Designing a playbook directly because he can run, I think that would be distorting who we want to be as a football team. But it has given us some different things that we can open up in the playbook. It does open some pages to it. As far as strategy goes, it's another skillset that we have available to us to use anytime we want to."

Ask the SOONERS how that trick play worked for them in the Rose Bowl!

First off, Mayfield was under center, not out wide. But point taken, it was a trick play.

That play worked because we had not one, but two busts on defense. First, Ledbetter got sucked inside on the toss sweep. If he follows his assignment and stays home, that play goes nowhere - Lamb likely gets tackled for a loss. Second, both Roquan and DBake had Mayfield covered but both came off when they realized Lamb broke contain. I'm not sure which one had responsibility for Mayfield (probably Roquan), but if one stays on Mayfield and the other comes up to get Lamb the play still goes nowhere. Tyler Clark was coming in for the tackle as well.

Point is that if you have two busts on defense, pretty much any play will work - whether it's a trick play or not.
