Kirby Smart, UGA Closes in on Top 2 Class
PORT ST. JOE, Fla. - Georgia’s signing class missed on the top running back in the country on Wednesday, but got the No. 1 linebacker.
But the Bulldogs appear headed to a consensus Top 3 class instead of the No. 1 overall class in the country. ESPN had UGA at No. 3 while Rivals and 247 both at the Bulldogs at No. 2 overall. UGA flipped 4-star Oak Park (MI) QB Dwan Mathis from Ohio State on Singing Day to add to a class that includes the No. 1 overall prospect in the country - IMG DL Nolan Smith.
The long-term fate of UGA QB/ATH commit John Rhys Plumlee seems cloudy. He did not sign a letter of commitment as of 2 PM EST.
Still, Georgia picked up five consensus five-star prospects on the day - Nakobe Dean, Clay Webb, Nolan Smith, Travon Walker and Dominick Blaylock. And all of the publicly-committed players UGA entered the day with, outside of Plumlee, signed with the Bulldogs.
Georgia is still considered a major player for 5-star Cedar Grove WR Jadon Haselwood, who plans to announce his decision and then enroll on January 5th. Tyrique Stevenson, who had said at a press conference at his high school that he, too, will announce on January 5th, is down to Miami and UGA.
