Recruiting Notes: "He'd Die For This State. He's A Bulldog Through And Through
ATHENS - The Georgia Bulldogs are having a big summer on the recruiting trail and current hold 17 commitments in the 2027 class.
One of Georgia’s lowest-ranked commitments at the moment in three-star defensive lineman, Waylon Wooten. The Grayson (GA) standout is ranked as the No. 82 DL prospect and the No. 804 overall prospect in the nation.
Those rankings won’t excite many Georgia fans, but Dawg Post caught up with Grayson head coach Greg Carswell to give Bulldog fans an idea of what Wooten brings to the table...
On what Georgia’s getting in Waylon Wooten...
“Georgia’s getting exactly what Kirby Smart is looking for. He’s a kid with fire, passion and energy. A kid who loves the game of football, and a kid who would die for this state. He's a Bulldog through and through. The kid grew up a Georgia fan. He shed tears the moment he said, “I'm going to the University of Georgia”. I think that's what people need to know about him. That he’s extremely passionate about the people he trusts, and Tray Scott and Kirby Smart are two people who earned his trust. I feel like he's going to go up there and he's going to work as hard as he can each and every day.”
“He’s just an unbelievable kid who has an unwavering desire to simply get this job done. He doesn't care about the things that come with the work. He cares about the product and the end result. He has a really good understanding of what football takes and what it means to get better and that's what he's going to be focused on.”
DON’T FORGET YOUR FANDUEL BETS!!
According to FanDuel, the Michigan State Spartans have +2200 odds to win the national championship next year.
On playing at a place like Grayson...
“He's coming from a really good program that's pushed him to the highest level. Waylon's had nine different Power Four defense linemen in the room with him at Grayson High School that's graduated before him so now it's his turn. I just think you're going to see from his senior year, just a kid with unbelievable tape, an unbelievable motor, unbelievable fire passion energy that's going to do everything for his team.”
“One thing I'll say about Tray Scott, Kirby Smart. They are they are doing everything they can to attract the top talent in the in the state of Georgia. This was an opportunity for Waylon. Georgia valued him high and he went there because they valued him. For Waylon, it's never been about a dollar sign. It’s about trust and loyalty.”
On his leadership skills...
“He's the heart and soul of our team. He's the juice of the locker room. He's the energy of the locker room. Yesterday we was at a 7-on-7 that he had nothing to do with. He's the guy out there yelling and making checks and keeping the energy up, congratulating guys when they do well, bringing them in when they did bad. He's just a guy who just loves his teammates and loves everybody around him getting better.”
On Georgia’s pursuit of Wooten...
“Tray Scott doesn’t take just anybody. He’s been evaluating Waylon since before his sophomore year and has done a really deep evaluation. We've been on campus a lot of different times. We've been around the coaching staff a lot. They've evaluated every piece of tape they had, their practice tape that they've got, their camp tape that they've had. They did a really deep evaluation and when all the facts came back it was still was a stamp. So I appreciate the University of Georgia for trusting us to develop the kids the way we develop.”
On Georgia’s plan for him...
“Waylon is a 1st and 2nd down nose guard. He's also a good 3rd-down interior push guy. He has extremely long arms and plays with twitch. So while he’s 6-foot-3, his frame allows him to play like he’s 6-foot-5. So his long arms, his compact frame, and his speed on off the ball allows him to play multiple positions. He does have the opportunity to have position flex which allows him to play anywhere from a 0, to a shade, to a 2i, to a 3. And even in some situations he could line up as a 4. They can move him and have a lot of position flex with him. So he's earned the right to be a 1st and 2nd down player.”
