ATHENS - Kirby Smart’s UGA Football program will conduct its final spring practice on Saturday, April 18 in Sanford Stadium.

That’s when G Day is set to take place, although the format of the day has not been confirmed nor has the date been formally announced by UGA. UGA Sports reported the date of the event weeks ago.

Only four times in history has UGA not held its annual spring scrimmage. UGA football coach Kirby Smart threatened to not play the game last year, but eventually the event was held, but it was not televised.

After the 2025 scrimmage Kirby said he was uncertain if his program would play another spring game.

“I don’t know. I’d say it’s year by year. It probably has more to do with my team; the health of our team; the number of players in college football,” he said. “We as coaches don’t control the numbers we have, so if we don’t have enough numbers we won’t be able to have the game. I think it’s a great tradition, but it’s more about what does our team need than just what Athens needs.”

The NCAA’s transfer portal terminating in January could change Kirby’s stance on the playing a broadcasting of the game. Insiders have told Dawg Post that was a major reason for the trepidation regarding the scrimmage a year ago.

UGA confirmed G Day last year in late March.

“We're planning to have a spring game. I've talked to Josh Brooks about it several times. We've had a conversation. But that doesn't mean it can't change,” Kirby said.
