ATHENS - It’s been a roller-coaster of a season so far for the Georgia Bulldog cornerbacks.

While returning starter Daylen Everette has been steady, head coach Kirby Smart has had a difficult time finding a dependable option on the other side.

Daniel Harris has starting experience, but he’s just too inconsistent. He’s simply not getting the job done. Then there’s Ellis Robinson, a former five-star prospect who certainly hasn’t lived up to expectations so far.

After giving up a touchdown to Germie Bernard on Alabama’s first drive, Robinson was replaced by fellow second-year player Demello Jones. A do-it-all athlete out of Swainsboro High School, Jones is a fast-rising defensive back who has quietly climbed the depth chart over time.

Now, it’s Jones turn to make a move on the starting job. If Harris and Robinson aren’t getting the job done, Smart needs to find someone who can. He’s still a work in progress, but Smart told reporters this week he’s been pleased with that he’s seen out of Jones during practice.

DON’T FORGET YOUR FANDUEL BETS!!

According to FanDuel, the Georgia Bulldogs have -158 odds to make the College Football Playoffs this season.

“He did some good things,” Smart said about Jones. “As the game went on, he got his hands on people and was able to play. He had some contested breakups that were big in terms of gaining confidence and strength. He tackled a couple times well and they had a couple gimmicks where they tried to trick him, and he saw it. So he did some good things, but he can improve a lot. We think he's a good player. He's going to give us some skill set that maybe we can use some other places on our defense, and hope he continues to work really hard and grow.”

This second, it’s hard to tell who will earn the starting No.2 cornerback job against Kentucky. Harris is still an option, and the staff would love to see Robinson continue to grow and develop more and more as the year moves along.

But after the Alabama game, don’t sleep on Jones. He broke up a pass on a key 3rd down in the second half and is talented enough to see the field more and more if he keeps improving.

We’re four games into the season now and we’re seeing some major issues in the secondary. They’re too inconsistent and are giving up too many plays through the air.

Some serious changes might need to be made, and one change could come at cornerback.

Will Jones see more of the field moving forward? Is Daniel Harris in the dog house? Can Ellis Robinson step his play up?

We’ll find out more throughout the week...
