ATHENS - Over the first two games we’ve seen a multitude of defenders take the field Between the Hedges for Glenn Schumann’s defense.

In the secondary, a tough, dynamic defensive back standing out is Kyron Jones. He’s a third-year player who did play in 12 games last year, so he’s not necessarily a new player, but he’s someone Georgia fans need to keep a close eye on moving forward.

The hard-hitting defender delivered a powerful tackle early in the Austin Peay game and ended the contest with three tackles, making his presence known early.

Head coach Kirby Smart told reporters this week that Jones won over the coaches last week during his standout play in practice.

“Well, he's practiced the best,” Smart said. “That’s why you earn things at Georgia. It’s what you do in practice. He's nowhere near where he needs to be and he knows that, but he is strong-handed. He is tough and fiery. He is quick. He's a quick learner and it tells you where he is in intelligence and where we are in depth.”

Jones was a productive running back in high school, rushing for 1,346 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior. He hit the 100-yard mark in six games and averaged an impressive 10.6 yards per carry. All while making 43 tackles on defense.

He’s a football player. He’s tough, gritty, and plays fast as 6-foot-0 205-pounds.

The Georgia staff saw his natural talent and potential to play in the secondary, and in year three, his stock is rising.

"Size and speed is how we evaluate them (defensive backs),” Smart added. “It's a criteria for that position. Toughness would be in there, too. I think it's hard to take a kid that plays quarterback and move him to defensive positions if he's just a quarterback, but Todd [Robinson] had some physicality to him. Kyron [Jones] had physicality to him from being a running back, and it's a requirement that you've got to be able to tackle.”

There are still plenty of options at the safety spot, but it’s clear Jones has the potential to make a big impact this fall.
