UGA Football, Kirby Smart Get Commitment from "Flashy" Young DB From California
ATHENS - Kirby Smart and UGA Football continue to steamroll through the summer with a recruiting roll that’s been uncommon in his decade-long tenure at Georgia.
The Bulldogs added another commitment Monday - the second of the day - this time from 2027 Donte Wright, who picked the Bulldogs over a slew of schools. The California native is considered consensus four-star prospect, but it is early in the recruiting process on the rating front.
“Wright is a big-time athlete with strong instincts in coverage,” Dawg Post’s Matt DeBary said of the Dawgs’ most-recent commitment. “He has a natural feel for where he plays. He can play with physicality in the run game. He’s a flashy defensive back who runs well and can make a play on the ball.”
Kirby has excelled in the development of defensive backs over the decades. Williams very well could also be active on special teams, a trait that DeBary says to watch out for.
“Wright also a weapon in the return game, DeBary said. “He is one of the top 2027 cornerbacks in the country. This is a big-deal get for Georgia. The bond established early with Bulldog cornerbacks coach Donte Williams has really paid off for that program.”
On Monday the Bulldogs shot up to the No. 2 consensus class in college football national recruiting rankings behind only USC. The Trojans have five more commitments than the Bulldogs - meaning Georgia could still catch USC for the top overall spot. Only three SEC programs are ranked in the top ten nationally - a sign that something has changed significantly, or that we are very early in this cycle.
