ATHENS - UGA Football punter Brett Thorson plans to return to Athens for the 2025 football season and forgo entering the NFL Draft, according to a post he made on X.

Thorson is known for his comedic prowess around the athletic facility and that translates to social media, as seen in his announcement post.

This is one thing that Kirby Smart does not need to worry about for next season as Thorson is considered one of the best punters in college football. He was a second team AP All-American selection this season and earned All-SEC Freshman team honors in 2022.

Thorson joined Georgia in 2022 and became the starting punter immediately. He has been the starting counter since then, and will now look to do so for four-straight seasons.

The Australian product suffered a knee injury in the SEC Championship game against Texas in December. Drew Miller was Thorson’s backup in that situation. In that game, Georgia trotted another punter out there for a fake punt attempt that was successful. Miller was the punter for Georgia in the Sugar Bowl loss to Notre Dame.

Thorson was one of three finalists for the Ray Guy Award for the nation’s top punter this season.

He has been a weapon for Georgia with his legs at times and has also been praised for his tackling skills as a punter. Smart had him speak to the team in a joking manner about tackling after he saved a punt from being returned for a touchdown this season. Although Georgia did have tackling issues, so that interaction was not all fun and games.

Thorson’s best moment perhaps was in a top-3 showdown in Athens against the No. 1-ranked Tennessee Volunteers. He booted a punt that ended up going for 75 yards and pinned the Vols at the 1-yard line.
