ATHENSUGA Football gave an update on starting QB Carson Beck Monday saying there is “no timetable” for the signal caller’s return. Beck left the SEC Championship Game at the half with a throwing-arm injury. He returned for the game-winning play.

It is unclear if Beck will be avalible for the No. 2 Bulldogs’ game in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl, or at any point in the CFP.

Beck was injured on the final play of the first half - scrambling to throw a Hail Mary pass as time expired. Beck, a senior from Jacksonville, and his family are exploring treatment options, UGA said in a statment provided to reporters Monday afternoon. The statement did not describe the specific injury to Beck - only calling it “an elbow injury.”

Punter Brett Thorson sustained a knee injury to his non-kicking leg in Saturday’s contest and will require season-ending surgery.

“Carson and Brett are both fierce competitors and extremely hard workers,” coach Kirby Smart said in the statemtn. “I’m confident they will attack their rehab with the same determination they exhibit in their daily habits. We will be here to support them every step of the way.”

The Bulldogs defeated the No. 2 Texas Longhorns in Atlanta at the SEC Championship Saturday afternoon. The win over Texas gave Georgia its 15th SEC title in school history. Beck was injured on the final play of the first half - scrambling to throw a Hail Mary pass as time expired. Backup Gunner Stockton came in at the start of the third quarter.

HUNKER DOWN THE CHIMNEY

“There's no good script for losing a quarterback or having to go to your backup,” Kirby said Sunday.

Stockton took what he was given and made the most of it from the start. He drove the Bulldogs down the field to score the first touchdown in the game.

Stockton ended the game going 12 of 16 for 71 yards passing with another eight yards rushing on eight carries. One of those was the penultimate run of the game - an eight-yard run that set up the Bulldogs’ game-wining play.

Stockton was knocked out of the game because his helmet left his head after a vicious tackle from Texas DB Andrew Mukuba. The call on the field was initially targeting on Mukuba, but officials reversed the call.

Because Stockton’s helmet was knocked off and the targeting call was overturned, Stockton was made to leave the contest - another quarterback would have to come in for one play.

“I assumed he would be able to stay in,” Kirby said after the game. “I realized we were going to have to take a snap with another quarterback. One of the offensive coaches said: ‘Carson can take a snap - that’s not an issue.’ So we did that.”

Beck handed the ball off to Trevor Etienne for the game-winning score.

“It was the perfect handoff,” Etiene told reporters after the game. “Best handoff of my life.”
