UGA Football's Win over Georgia Tech the Most-Watched Game in Series History | 8.5 Million
ATHENS - No. 5 UGA Football’s eight-overtime win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets was watched by a Black Friday audience of 8.5 million viewers - the most ever for Clean Old Fashioned Hate.
The Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets were third most-watched game of the weekend behind Michigan’s upset of Ohio State and A&M-Texas. Clean Old Fashioned Hate outdrew the Iron Bowl - an amazing accomplishment for the rivalry considering how few people have watched Tech-Georgia on many Saturdays in the past by comparison.
Last week was the first time since the 1990s that Tech-UGA has been played on a non-Saturday. It is also the most-watched UGA-Tech game ever by 3.2 million - more than 60% more than the closest game the two have played… which was last year’s 5.3 million audience in primetime on ABC.
Disney has not yet said that the series will continue on Black Friday, but now that the game can be put on ABC in consecutive years, unlike in the past when the game was restricted to either CBS or ESPN, it is possible Disney executives will want to continue the game on Black Friday.
The conclusion of the regular season over the weekend also cemented the Bulldogs’ status in the TV world. For the first time this decade a game other than Ohio State-Michigan was the most-watched game of the college football season - Georgia at Texas.
The Horns and Dawgs was viewed by 13.19 million viewers in October. This weekend’s matchup in the SEC, at 4 PM, could make a run at topping that mark. But the afternoon kickoff could hold down some of the numbers.
