ATHENS - Georgia Bulldog quarterback Carson Beck is tough to beat.

A seasoned veteran now with NFL arm talent and a full grasp of Mike Bobo’s offense, Beck came back for one more season to win it all. He’s arguably the best quarterback in college football and proved it once again during Georgia’s 34-3 win over Clemson.

Beck has just one loss under his belt as a starter. Against Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide. So if anyone knows how to beat Beck and the Dawgs, it’s Saban.

The legendary Alabama football head coach turned ESPN commentator was on College Gameday last weekend and gave some insight on how he prepared to take on Beck and the Bulldogs last year.

“The thing you have to do playing Carson Beck is he can run and make plays with his feet, but if you make him move in the pocket and reset his feet to throw, it does impact him.”

Beck was 21/29 in that 2023 SEC Championship loss to Alabama for 243 yards and one rushing touchdown. Certainly not the game Georgia fans are used to seeing from Beck.

But Saban is right. Yes, Carson Beck can move. No doubt about it. He’s mobile and has shown the ability to take off for a first down when the opportunity is there. He’s also shown he can buy time in the pocket to scan the field and deliver a strike to a second or third option.

But at the end of the day, you have to create pressure and make him uncomfortable. Throw him off balance. Make him uneasy. The same way you beat other quarterbacks.

However, Beck isn’t pressured much behind his elite offensive line. And even when he does get pressured, he has the ability to sometimes find his way around it and make a big play.

According to FanDuel, the Buffalo Bills have +900 odds to win the AFC Championship this upcoming season.

Saban’s point goes back to the secondary. He knew he had some really good pass rushers. So if his defensive backs could play sound coverage down the field, Beck would have to not only elude oncoming pressure, but throw off balance and into tight windows. They also made him rush his throws at times while impacting his decision-making.

But pulling all that off is tough. Nobody else has been able to tame Carson Beck and the Bulldog offense over the last year and one game.

Saban went on to compliment Beck’s game later in the same broadcast.

“I think Carson Beck is one of the best quarterbacks in the country as far as his ability to process and get the ball out of his hands quickly. He’s very accurate. He can throw it short or deep. He can layer throws over the middle. This guy is a really good player who is very smart and has a handle on their offense.”

The days of staying up late to prepare for a quarterback like Carson Beck are over for Nick Saban, and he seems pretty happy about it.
