ATHENS - It’s officially game week for Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs who will take on Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers this Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia.

After coming up short last year in their quest for a three-peat, these Dawgs are hungry and ready to show the rest of college football that they are still the team to beat.

Which players could emerge and have a “breakout” game against the Tigers? We asked sources around the Georgia program for the latest....

Damon Wilson - EDGE

A promising pass-rusher who is working hard to become a complete, every-down defender on the EDGE, Wilson is a former 5-star prospect who has a chance to have an outstanding sophomore season this fall. He may not start in the game, but even off the bench, Wilson has a chance to make a big impact and make a name for himself on a national stage. Playing against a sub-par offensive line, and chasing a quarterback who likes to hold onto the ball, this 6-foot-4 250-pound defender has a chance to make several plays in the backfield when he gets on the field. Sources say his stock is rising, and he’s someone who could have a big game on Saturday.

According to FanDuel, the Atlanta Falcons have -194 odds to make the 2024 NFL Playoffs upcoming season.

Nate Frazier - Running Back

We’ve heard throughout fall camp about the potential this dynamic freshman back brings to the table. One of the best running back prospects from the 2024 class, this California native is a versatile back with size, speed, and excellent hands out of the backfield. This second, we do expect running back Trevor Etienne to play on Saturday, but with Roderick Robinson out with a turf toe, and Branson Robinson coming off a season-ending injury, look for Frazier to get some looks on Saturday. He’s a true weapon on offense who will be tough to keep on the bench for very long. Don’t be surprised if Frazier makes a big play or two, or three, against Clemson in the season-opener.

Cole Speer - Wide Receiver/Special Teams

Yes, the Dawgs have several receivers who might see a target or two come their way before Speer does, but make no mistake, he’s a guy who could make an impact this weekend. In fact, Kirby Smart had a lot to say about Speer last week during his mid-week press conference.

“Cole's been a dominant special teams player, and he's going to take on more role this year at receiver on top of being a good special teams player. He's a core product of our system. He came in probably under-recruited, not highly touted. He's gotten better every year. He's really tough. He's really physical. He's really fast. He can dominate on all four phases of special teams, but he's also created a role for himself at wideout.”

We’ll likely see a Speer on special teams, but sources have been high on Speer’s ability and work ethic throughout fall camp. He’s earned the right to play and has a chance to make an impact on both special teams and at receiver.

Joenel Aguero - Defensive Back

A tough, hard-hitting safety that has come a long way since his arrival in Athens last year, this could be the game where Aguero shows what he’s capable of. Sources say he’s had a great fall camp, understands his role in the secondary, and brings a level of toughness and physicality the staff wants to see from their defensive backs.

“We're still challenging him to communicate a little better, meaning verbalize things to people in front and behind you”, Smart said about Aguero this week. He does a really good job with see ball, hit ball, cover people, strike people. He's a good football player.”

The Dawgs play a lot of defensive backs, and Aguero, in year two, has a big opportunity in front of him. The staff has always been high on him and his potential, and we could see a glimpse of that this weekend.

Daylen Everette - Cornerback

Yes, Everette started last year, but many around the Georgia program expect him to take a big step forward this year. He had an up-and-down 2023 season, but the Tigers don’t appear to have a “killer” at wide receiver like they have in the past. Everette was a former Clemson commitment in high school, and sources say he’s done his best to lock in and have a much better 2024 season. He’ll be tested, but Everette should be up for the challenge this weekend. Don’t be surprised if he has a nice game in coverage.

Lawson Luckie - Tight End

There’s been a lot of talk about Oscar Delp this off-season, and rightfully so, but this is still Georgia, and they’re going to play their tight ends. They did add a transfer in veteran Ben Yurosek, and there’s a chance he could make an impact on Saturday too, but don’t be surprised if Lawson Luckie is out there making plays as a pass-catcher. He’ll have a bigger role this year, and I expect him to see the field early and often against the Tigers this weekend.
