ATHENS - Kirby Smart’s UGA Football program is the consensus No. 1 team in the country. That happened after the Bulldogs were ranked the No. 1 program in the country by the Associated Press

A week ago Kirby’s Bulldogs were ranked No. 1 by the coaches. Monday’s announcement means that Georgia enters the season as the consensus No. 1 team in the nation. The Bulldogs will take on No. 14 Clemson to open the season.

“I've never honestly paid any attention to it, and we don't talk about it as a team,” the head coach said after being asked about high expectations at the start of Georgia’s fall camp.

It has been common of late for college football to have a consensus No. 1 team. The last time there was a split at the top of the rankings was in 2012 when Lane Kiffin’s USC Trojans and Les Miles’ LSU Tigers enters the season at No. 1 in the two major bowls. Niether team finished ranked in the top ten at the end of the season. Kiffin and the Trojans wrapped up a 7-6 season with a 21-7 loss to Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl.

According to FanDuel, the Georgia Bulldogs have excellent +280 odds to win the CFP national championship this season.

The last time a consensus No. 1 team ended the season as national champions came in 2017 when Nick Saban’s Alabama team started the year at the top, got into the College Football Playoff without winning the SEC West and beat UGA on a miracle play to win it all 26-23 in Atlanta.

College football’s path to a national title in 2024 will include something new - a 12-team playoff that starts in December. That would compound Georgia dealing with one of the most difficult schedules in school history, the addition of Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC and the SEC Championship Game in December… if the Bulldogs make it there.

Georgia will have to manage road games at Kentucky, Alabama, Texas and Ole Miss to arrive in Atlanta.
