ATHENS - UGA Football TE Pearce Spurlin has played football for the final time.

UGA coach Kirby Smart said Tuesday that the reserve tight end is taking a medical disqualification because of a congenital heart condition. Kirby said the program had been monitoring Spurlin’s condition for some time.

“They made the decision to give up football to be safe,” Kirby told reporters before the Bulldogs’ first practice of the spring. “It is just too much at risk for him. I hate it for him because he was going to be a very good football player. We think a lot of his mom and dad. He will stay with the team.”

Spurlin played in six contests in 2023 - catching three balls for 60 yards. He had a 31-yard pass in the Orange Bowl during UGA football’s 63-3 win over Florida State

“We care deeply for Pearce, and he will remain on scholarship and part of our program,” Kirby said in a statement. “Our tight ends coach Todd Hartley and the four other tight ends hate for a person and a player like Pearce to not be a part of their room, and they will continue to provide him with the support he needs as he goes through this transition.”
