ATHENS - If there’s one thing you can always count on for the Georgia Bulldogs on the recruiting trail, it’s that assistant Todd Hartley is going to bring in an incredibly talented tight end class. He’s built the best tight end room in college football, and he always finds a way to get his guy on the trail.
He landed 5-star Darnell Washington in the 2020 class, 4-star Brock Bowers in the 2021 class, and he signed his top 2022 target in last year’s class in 4-star Oscar Delp.
Now, Hartley is ahead of schedule in the 2023 class and already has two of the nation’s best on the commit list in 4-stars Pearce Spurlin and Lawson Luckie.
Both were in Athens this past weekend for their official visits and theey both had their recruiting hat on. Dawg Post caught up with both to talk about what makes UGA special, and why they wanted to play for Georgia’s excellent tight ends coach.
“What makes UGA special is I feel like they do everything the right way”, Luckie told Dawg Post. “Everyone treats you right. There’s not a lot of lying going on with them, and you can’t say that with everyone. I love coach Hartley because of how passionate and consistent he is.”
Luckie is a Bulldog legacy and had an impressive season for the Norcross Blue Devils last fall, catching 33 passes for 358 yards and three touchdowns. Wuth a new offensive coordinator at Norcross, look for the Blue Devils to throw it around more in 2022, giving Luckie an opportunity to have a giant senior season as a pass catcher.
Spurlin, one of the top pass-catching tight ends across the country, said the people associated with the Georgia program make it different than anywhere else.
“What makes UGA special is the people that are involved”, Spurlin told Dawg Post. “They all care so much and do everything to be great. It’s like a family. The culture there is unmatched and I can’t wait to be a part of it. what I like most about Coach Hartley is that he strives to be perfect in every way possible. And he works so hard to make us better players and better man I can’t wait for that to be my everyday life.”
Spurlin was unstoppable last season as a junior, catching 74 passes for 1,404 yards and 20 touchdowns.
According to the 247 Composite Rankings, Spurlin is the No. 2 TE prospect in the country. Luckie is ranked as the No. 11 TE prospect in the country.
