ATHENS - Kirby Smart and UGA football are filling the void left by Bryan McClendon with a familiar face.

Former UGA WR and offensive coordinator James Coley is returning to UGA Football to coach receivers.

Coley’s first stint in Athens ended after the 2019 season. Coley was the program’s receivers coach the first two seasons he was in Athens. Coley will be asked to attack the recruiting trail in a major way. His connections in south Florida will likely be leaned on in order to do so.

The Bulldogs have not signed a consensus five-star wide receiver during Kirby’s massively-successful time at UGA - a void for a program that has won two national titles.

Bryan McClendon left the program earlier this month to join the staff at the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers as that franchise’s receivers coach. Kirby has had to replace four different coaches this offseason. He still has one spot to fill with the departure of former running backs coach Dell McGee Friday night. McGee was named the head coach at Georgia State.

247 first reported the news of Coley leaving Shane Beamer’s South Carolina to return to UGA.
