ATHENS - UGA Football QB Carson Beck has made a decision on playing in the Orange Bowl against the Florida State Seminoles.
Beck told reporters Sunday afternoon that he will play in the matchup, which takes place in South Florida on December 30.
"Yes, I am playing in the game," Beck told the Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer.
***According to FanDuel, the Michigan Wolverines are 4.5-point favorites over the Washington Huskies in next week’s national championship game***
Beck started 13 games for the Bulldogs - going 12-1 in his first season as the starting quarterback for Georgia. Kirby Smart’s program narrowly missed out on a third appearance in a row in the College Football Playoff because of a three-point loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.
Beck went on to say that he wasn’t sure if he would return for the 2024 season at Georgia.
"I'm not sure yet. Just actively thinking, but right now focused on trying to beat Florida State,” he said. "There's not really a timeline. It’s the biggest decision of my life.”
Most NFL prognosticators do not have Beck going in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. It would not be unprecedented for an incumbent starting quarterback eligibility remaining at Georgia to announce his intent to leave for the NFL early after a bowl game.
Jake Fromm played in Georgia’s Sugar Bowl win over Baylor at the conclusion of the 2019 season, and declared for the Draft a few days later. Matthew Stafford started in Georgia’s win over Michigan State in the Citrus Bowl at the end of the 2008 season, and turned professional after the game.
Fromm was selected in the 167th overall in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Bills. Stafford was drafted No. 1 overall by the Lions. He won Super Bowl LVI with the Rams.
Should he return, Beck would enter his fifth season at Georgia - a rarity in today’s college football. Insider speculation is that Beck will, in fact, return for his final season. Backup quarterback Brock Vandagriff transferred to Kentucky earlier this month, and 5-star UGA commit Dylan Raiola is expected to sign with Nebraska instead of UGA - severing a commitment he’s had to the Bulldogs for months only days before Signing Day. Insiders claim both moves are a result of Beck’s intent to come back in 2024.
Nonetheless, the Bulldogs can close out a 13-1 season with a win over No. 5 Florida State in the Orange Bowl. Georgia is a 14-point favorite to beat the Noles.
