ATHENS - The regular season is over, and now we enter one of the craziest weeks of the college football season.
Coaches are leaving for other jobs, and players are entering the transfer portal.
UGA football coach Kirby Smart has already gown himself one hell of a coaching tree, and today that tree extended another branch as defensive backs coach Fran Brown accepted a job to be the next head football coach at Syracuse.
Brown, who was hired by Kirby Smart on February 18, 2022, has done a terrific job for the Bulldogs not only as part of the defensive staff, but on the recruiting trail as well.
Which leads to the big question....
Will any current Bulldog commitments look elsewhere now that Brown is leaving Georgia?
Dawg Post asked around and got some answers....

The first player Bulldog fans are wondering about is 5-star Ellis Robinson IV. The No.3 overall prospect in the country, Robinson has true lockdown potential at cornerback due to his lengthy 6-foot-1 175-pound frame, outstanding ball-skills, quick feet, and natural speed. He checks all the boxes coaches look for in an elite defensive back, and sources say Robinson has no plans on opening his recruitment. In fact, Robinson tweeted out “Go Dawgs” shortley after the news broke that Brown was being hired at Syracuse.
Robinson was recruited hard by the entire defensive staff, and he’s told Dawg Post in the past that he loves knowing coach Smart is a former defensive back who still likes to coach up that part of his team. The Georgia secondary is one of the nation’s best, and Robinson knows it will likely stay that way as long as Smart is in charge.
Then there’s 4-star Ondre Evans. The 6-foot-1 180-pounder out of Christ Presbyterian Academy (TN) is one of Georgia’s most recent commitments, and he confirmed with Dawg Post that he’s still “locked in” with Georgia.
“Still 100% locked in”, Evans said. “Happy for Fran getting that opportunity but I’m still committed to Georgia and I’m ready to get down there.”
Evans is ranked as the No. 17 CB prospect and the No. 130 overall prospect in the country.
Of course, you can’t forget about four-star Demello Jones. The playmaking machine out of Swainsboro (GA) has been firmly committed to Georgia since jumping on board back in mid-March, but it’s clear Jones developed a close bond with coach Brown during his recruitment. Sources tell Dawg Post that they don’t expect Jones to open up his recruitment, but Jones himself didn’t not want to comment on Brown leaving the Georgia program.
“no comment at the moment.”
