In the scenario described, which was the Dawgs losing to Bama in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta, Finebaum and Smith both said the Dawgs would still get in over teams that also have a one-loss record.
"Georgia. The two-time defending champions. Georgia is doing whatever it wants to do,” Smith said. “Whatever Georgia has been called on to do (they've done). If I have an opportunity situation to get them in? To be the man - you have to beat the man. I am not going to take them out to give someone with the same amount of losses a chance. I am going to put the two-time champion up in there. And I am going to see who is going to go take it from them.”
The Bulldogs (+230) have reemerged as the betting favorite to win the national title - taking over from Michigan (+300) on Saturday. Georgia is listed as the team most likely to make the playoff right now at -360, which gives the Dawgs roughly a 78% chance to get into the CFP - Oregon (-180 or 64%), Texas (+125 or 44%) and Alabama (+145 or 41%) all have a loss and lower odds to get into the CFP than the Dawgs.
“I don't think a loss to Alabama should disqualify UGA. Of course I don’t see a lot of people predicting that,” Finebaum added.
Georgia is listed as a 4.5-point favorites to beat Alabama next Saturday in Atlanta.
