ATHENS - UGA Football TE Brock Bowers will undergo surgery Monday for a high ankle sprain the junior suffered on Satuday during the Bulldogs’ 37-20 win over Vanderbilt.

UGA said in a statement Monday that the surgery was “to stabilize the ankle and a full recovery is anticipated.”

In the first half against Vandy, Bowers had four catches for 22 yards and two carries for 11 yards. He has 2,391 career receiving yards, which moves him to fifth in school history and his 160 career catches puts him in the sixth spot in Georgia history. He left the game in midway through the 2nd quarter with an ankle injury and did not return.

Kirby Smart told reporters after the game that the program would have to wait to see the results of an MRI before determining what’s next.

"It's an ankle sprain, don't know how severe," Smart told reporters after the 37-20 win. "X-rays were negative. Until we get an MRI we won't know anything more."

Brock Bowers has +6000 odds to be selected with the 1st overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft according to FanDuel.

Bowers was one of three Bulldogs taken off the field on Saturday. UGA OL starter Xavier Truss and UGA reserve DL Christian Miller were also helped off the field during the win.

“I mean, we worry about our players all the time. I think Christen Miller went down too, so it’s not a lot you can do. It’s the game of football, right?” Kirby said after the game. “They’re going to play tackle, and you’re going to get injured. You’re going to have bumps and bruises. You’re going to have injuries and things. We’re not going to overreact to it. We’re thinking about Brock, but I think he’ll be fine.”

The Bulldogs are off this week. No. 1 Georgia will take on the Gators in Jacksonville on October 28. Then the Bulldogs return to Athens for games with Missouri and Ole Miss before the SEC closer at Tennessee.

Georgia did not provide a timeline for Bowers’ return other than to say “a full recovery is anticipated.” Several UGA players, including fellow UGA TE Lawson Luckie, have had ankle surgeries this season and have returned to play for the Bulldogs.

Bowers is considered the top tight end in college football. He is considered one of the top NFL prospects for the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.
