ATHENS - Kirby Smart and No. 1 UGA football team have faced only two quality opponents this season. South Carolina and Auburn.

And in both games, the Bulldog offense needed a critical second-half performance to come from behind and secure the victory.

However, the Bulldogs scored less than 30 points in both games. That’s not what Georgia fans are used too.

Some will want to blame Mike Bobo. Others can’t wait to blame Mike Bobo. And while it’s clear he’s been a step down from Todd Monken, who put together the greatest Bulldog offense of all time last year, there are still plenty of other factors at play.

It’s not Mike Bobo’s fault there’s not an explosive running back on the roster. Its not his fault Ladd McConkey has been hurt, or that Branson Robinson went down. Guys are open, and he’s coaching up Carson Beck more and more each game.

I’m not a college offensive coordinator just yet, but I know Mike Bobo knows more than I do as it relates to building an offense and coaching quarterbacks. The man knows what he’s doing and has proven it multiple times.

Against Auburn, Bobo’s offense scored when they needed too the most, going touchdown, field goal, touchdown to end the game. The fight and grit, along with Georgia’s excellent 3rd down success and lack or pre-snap penalties is what impressed Kirby Smart the most.

“Composure is a big part of it” Smart told reporters on Monday. “I thought we would have some. And we simulated having some. So I thought Coach Bobo and his offensive staff did an incredible job. You take a quarterback who's never played on the road and start at Auburn and not have procedural penalties, you had good organization, good substitution patterns, you had good snap count variation, changing tempos. I thought they did a good job managing that. But that's not the issue now. I'm worried about Kentucky now. And they got a really good defense.”

I think “really good” might be a stretch. Sure, they played well against the Gators, but who said Florida’s offense is any good? Facing Georgia’s offense will be the biggest test for Kentucky so far this season.

The ‘Dawgs have a chance to finally find their offensive identity on Saturday. Will they start out slow again and fight off Kentucky for another 27-20 type of game? Or will they find rhythm early on and manage to get to the 40-point mark?

Eventually, they’ll need to score 40 points to win a ballgame. It might be against Missouri or Ole Miss. It could be against Tennessee in Knoxville. Hell, it could be this weekend if Georgia can’t stop Kentucky’s rushing attack.

This is a big one for Mike Bobo and Carson Beck, who has +15000 odds to win the Heisman Trophy this season according to FanDuel. But if they continue playing with more composure, keep executing on 3rd down, and make plays in the red-area, they’ll be just fine.
