ATHENS - UGA Football heads into the first SEC game of the year as a massive favorite to win, and ESPN’s College Gameday thinks Kirby Smart’s Dawgs could throttle South Carolina.

“First test for Georgia, although its probably an open-book pop quiz,” ESPN’s Rece Davis said to open the show.

The Bulldogs are listed as a 27-point favorite to win the game. No. 1 Georgia has won 19 games in a row dating back to the lopsided Orange Bowl win over Michigan. South Carolina has struggled this season. The Gamecocks are 1-1 with a win over Furman and a loss to North Carolina.

In the loss to the Heels, South Carolina allowed nine sacks.

“Big question on the road: can USC protect Spencer Rattler,” ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit asked.

Bulldogs Welcome The Gamecocks To Town

Georgia will face its first Southeastern Conference opponent with South Carolina coming to Dooley Field in Sanford Stadium on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised by CBS in what is the final year of the network’s contract with the SEC. The 2023 Bulldogs return nine players with starting experience on offense, including junior C Sedrick Van Pran and All-American and John Mackey Award winner junior TE Brock Bowers, who was the 2021 and 2022 leader in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns.

Currently, Georgia ranks 14th nationally with an average of 46.5 points/game. Last season, the Bulldogs ranked fifth nationally averaging 41.1 points/game. A few offensive veterans have not suited up in the first two games and should bolster the unit when they return. The Bulldogs are missing wideout junior Ladd McConkey and senior running back Daijun Edwards. Also of note, senior Kendall Milton is not 100 percent but has played in the first two games. In the opener, he finished with a team-high 53 yards on nine carries including a 37-yarder. This past Saturday, Milton had seven rushes for 18 yards and a score plus two catches for nine yards.

Junior QB Carson Beck is in his first year as the starter. He has played only in the first three quarters in the first pair of games after the Bulldogs have built a substantial lead. Georgia tallied 559 yards of total offense (149 rushing, 400 passing) against UT Martin in the opener. The leading rusher has been true freshman Roderick Robinson II with 14 carries for 88 yards and two touchdowns while 15 different Bulldogs have caught a pass.

About South Carolina

The Gamecocks arrive in Athens 1-1 after dropping their season-opening contest against No. 17 North Carolina 31-17 in Charlotte and beating Furman 47-21 in Columbia last weekend. South Carolina was 8-5 last year, including 4-4 in the SEC, and is coached by former Bulldog assistant coach Shane Beamer. Beamer is in his third year with the Gamecocks and sports a 16-12 record.

Spencer Rattler returns at quarterback for South Carolina. He is 55-for-66 for 698 yards and three touch- downs with no interceptions. Rattler leads the league in Completion Percentage at 83 percent. The leading rusher is Dakereon Joyner who has 65 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns. Xavier Legette leads the Gamecocks and the SEC in receiving with 15 catches for 296 yards and a score and is the SEC receiving leader in Yards/ Game with 148. This marks the first of six SEC games in a row for the Gamecocks, including four away from campus. As usual, South Carolina will conclude its season with a non-conference showdown with Clemson.
